Wilde Question follow up
Okay, the Armadillo Guitar bridge *IS*
non-magnetic, per the folks at AG. I have one on the way. I hope it solves the problems I've been having. I can live with hypersensitivity to knocks, bumps, strap lock moving in its socket, etc. What I CAN'T deal with is the feedback from even the most moderate gain. At stage volume, even a slightly distorted sound elicits squeals from my amp behind me. I suppose I'll find out. I order the "L" model designed for the saddles. I'm keeping the Stew-Mac compensated saddles that are on the guitar\ bridge currently. If anyone has ever made this change using a Wilde 290TL, I'd love to hear from you regarding how it changed the sound of the instrument for you. |

I had exactly the same problem with my L290TL in a stamped steel bridge. I went back to my Gotoh brass bridge, and ALL squeal went away. It was amazing.
As an experiment, I had the guitar plugged into an amp as I removed the pickup from the bridge. I pulled the plate with the pickup attached, then removed the pickup mounting screws. I could tap on the pickup while it was still within the plate and hear all of that knock and noise. I just pulled the pickup away from the plate, and ALL of the sensitivity to knock disappeared. I could go back and forth and make the microphonics appear and disappear at will. It was dramatic. As an extra added bonus, the pickup just sounded better in the brass bridge. It was less harsh, not quite so edgy. Also, the noise cancelling ability was much better in the brass bridge (perfect, in fact; absolutely silent), but in the steel bridge I still had some hum due to its distortion of the magnetic field. You really are doing yourself a favor getting the new bridge for this particular pickup. Since then, I've sold my L290TL and replaced it with the L280TL I originally had. I preferred the more traditional, less midrangy sound of the L280TL. Maximum twang. |

This is your pickup we're talking about JVB. I'm curious to see what I'll wind up with once the Armadillo Guitar bridge is installed with the pickup. |

I don't know, I never checked the Gotoh.
I have one already, and using a pickup, I tested it and found it to be magnetic. Whereas the good folks at Armadillo Guitar confirmed their "L" model to be non-magnetic brass. Apparently not all brass is created equal. Either way I have an Armadillo Guitar bridge coming this week. I really hope it works, as I really dig the 290TL in the guitar I have it in. |
