Minihum vs. single coil
I'm spec'ing a Larrivee Bakersfield (daphne blue with a rosewood fingerboard) and I'm torn between the single coil neck pickup or a mini-humbucker (Duncan SM-1).
Can anyone speak to the differences/advantages of one or the other? (Both in general and on the Bakersfield in particular if you've played both.) I'm not that well versed on Teles, I'm a little more of a Strat guy. I have played a few Teles with single coils but never had the chance to sample one with a humbucker. Thanks! |

I've played several single coil Teles and the Hot Rod 52 which has the Duncan SM-1.
The Duncan SM-1 won't sound very much different than a typical neck single coil. It's quite bright and mudfree compared to a real humbucker. Of course it will sound a little bit fuller than the single coil and will add a bit of versatility to the Tele. Depends if you're after a traditional tele or a hot rodded version. |

The Larivee Bakersfield looks mega cool. Have not had the opportunity to play one yet. Especially like the look of the wide neck (1 3/4" at the nut), striking grain patterns, thin finish, and quality hardware. Very tempting. Don't know about the pickups, but can't stand buzzing and hum, so the mini hb might be a good choice. I like Bill Lawrence/Wilde twin blades (nice and quiet), but they're not a straight drop in for the neck (they're Strat size). Let us know how you get on with your Bakersfield.
