Which pup for Tele that is not a twanger?

I recently finished my first parstcaster, here, and put some Fender nocaster pups in it. It really has some good twang.

But now I'm working on my second Tele style guitar now, (here). I used a pre-cut body, but I'm carving a neck. The body is a burst done with sparkle. Anyway, I'm looking for this guitar to have a little more umph, non-twang. I had thought of trying the Tele Texas Specials and/or a Twisted Tele neck pup, but I understand they sound fairly Strat-like. And I already have a Strat. So, any pointers on what pups I might find for the Tele with a little growl to them? The kind of music I play is blues, blues-rock and rock, but not metal. Thanks!

The Stuart Blackguard Bridge is pretty growly - but I recently heard a colleague's tele with a set of Lollar (special T's I think) - and was impressed with the big sound it had..

Rio Grandes, Muy Grandes with a 4-way are blues monsters IMHO.

I'd check out Vintagevibeguitars.com - Pete Biltoft's website. I have his CCRider and SP-90 pickups in a guitar that has become my only instrument, or will be when I get the last of the dozen plus guitars I had sold. Pete's pickups have a tone that is amazing - I'd call it rich, full, complex, and so on. Plus his pickups cost somewhat less than other boutique pickups. The best part is that you can talk to him directly and he will build the pickups only when he is sure you will get EXACTLY what you want. Great person and fabulous pickups.

Twang is in the fingers, IMO.

Seymour Duncan 'lil '59er-a killer rock and blues pickup! Set it up with a series/split/parallel mini-switch and you can get three good sounds out of it, too!

Just do a single humbucker in the bridge, since you already got the traditional Tele covered. (That's what I'm doin')

I can't imagine any not liking the Nocasters. I have a set in my parts-o-caster and they are the shiznitz. So if you don't like the Nocasters, I can't imagine what you might like instead.

But +1 on the Rio Grandes. They make great pups. I think the Texas Specials would be a good choice as well, definitely will have more umph!

A friend has a tele with the new(ish) n3 noiseless pickups that have a good rock tone to them. i don't think fender sell them without the guitars yet though so you'd have to look out for a used set

Growl and twang is in your attack. Any old pickup will do this. You can also just dial your tone knob back slightly.

Oh, I didn't say I didn't like the Nocasters. They're great. I mean, they are really great pickups. They sound killer. I just want something different in my next Tele.

Man, these boutique pups are expensive. I've been listening to videos on Youtube and I've heard the SD 'lil 59, the Lollar special T, Lollar 52, Texas Specials, Rio Grande and I think a Stuart. I really liked the Lollar Special T, as well as the Duncan 'lil 59. I gotta check out the Vintage Vibe stuff too. They are much better priced! Thank all of you for your ideas. This guitar is set to have single coils...I think my next one after this will have a humbucker in the neck at least. But for the current build I have a while to decide still, so who knows?!

I am mainly a blues/rock and rock player and I have the Lollar Special T in my #1 telecaster. It really does what you are looking for very well. IMO, it has plenty of smooth growl and with the tone knob rolled back a bit really fattens up for leads. You won't get any country twang out of it but that's not what you are looking for. I have mine paired with a Don Mare Stelly and I love the combination.

Thanks. Of all that I've listened to so far, I have to say I like the Lollar Special T's the best. I'm just gonna have to suck it up and save up a few more bucks so I can get them. In a 4-way switch setup, they ought to really put out great sounds.
