Fender 51 Nocaster Pickup Set in 62 Japan Tele
Hello,
I own a Fender 62 Japan Telecaster and I am happy with it ;-) Does anybody have more Information about the Pickups? http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_62_t...om_rw_3tsb.htm For distortion they could have more power. Does an upgrade to Fender 51 Nocaster Pickups make sense? I would love to hear some opinions. regards skm001 |

I just posted basically the same thing earlier today in this section of the forum, about a '62 MIJ Tele I just got. I've been messing with the pickup height a bit, and while I'm still set on replacing the bridge with something a bit meatier, the neck pickup is pretty sweet at around 5/64-6/64. Very smooth and clear, even with distortion. The only info I've been able to find about the stock pickups (simply listed as "Japan Vintage" on the Fender Japan website) is that the bridge is 6.5k and the neck is 7.5k.

What are you after? Tell us more about what sound you have in your head, what you like/not about your tele, is it dark or bright sounding one, what is your rig etc. As for Nocaster, the bridge pickup delivers twang without icepick while sounds great with gain/overdrive too. The neck pickup has stratty sound. If you want more traditional sound from neck pickup, go with OV. What I really love about Nocaster is they are very pick sensitive. Of course other pickup makers have great products too.

Well, whenever I hear "twang-rock", these pickups come to my mind: Nocaster, SD Jerry Donahue and SD Broadcaster. They're all great. Nocaster is darker than Broadcaster with Jerry Donahue in between, IMHO. Just pick which one would suit best in your tele. If you don't have a problem with neck pickup, no need to replace it. Keystones can twang and rock nicely too, in refined way (clearer).

When I mentioned Nocaster, SD Jerry Donahue and SD Broadcaster, I was talking about the bridge pickup, not the neck. I guess most usually mentioned warm, smooth, sweet, clear, articulate, bluesy or jazzy when talking about neck pickup, not twang or rock.

Yes absolutely - and if you doubt it check the Fender part numbers with Dave at dbg. He is a really good guy. They are great pickups - I love them. There are a few threads about them in the pickups discussion group if you do a search.
