SD STL-1 or STL-1b for basswood MIJ Custom

I'm going to buy new Seymour Duncan bridge pickup next week but I just can't deside.. witch one would you recommend? STL-1b Broadcaster has more output, would that be benefit? I just kinda like sweet sound of STL-1. I also liked sound sample of SD Jerry Donahue pickup, but it's better pickup for bright sounding guitars(?) and this one isn't. Any other suggestions?

Guitar is Custom '72 Telecaster (MIJ 94-95) with body made of basswood. It has Fender stock Humbucker.

Sweet guitar, I don't think you would go wrong with any of the above. My favorite would be a Nocaster then the Broadcaster. Talk to Telenator about upgrading the neck bucker and you will be no-ones Beast of Burden

I just put an STL-1 in the bridge of my MIM standard and it's my favorite pickup I've ever used in a tele. I read about the pickup and was very interested and then I found the review below on youtube. The guy's kinda a dufus, but he does give a good demonstration of the pickup.

I watched that drunk guys video earlier and was impressed with that STL-1 sound. I'm actually turning to STL-1.

Telenator specializes in building WRHB, like your neck pup, to get them sounding more like the real thing. He posts here in the just pickups forum, keep an eye open for him. You have a good guitar, with the right electronics and pickups it can be great.

As I said earlier any of the pickups you listed would work great in there. The neck pickup is where the magic lies in this model.

I typed for hours, my hands are hurtin'

Good choice either way. I have both pups in my two MIJ 62RI. JD is darker with more midrange punch. Broadcaster has a little more snap.

In my basswood paisley, the alnico pro II seymour duncan made it the best sounding tele I've ever owned. I also have a '72 custom just like yours which I tried two different pickups in. The hot for tele was nice but still had the single coil noise. I later put a seymour duncan stack in there to better match the higher output of the neck pickup and made the guitar noise free in any switch position. Another good mod is to make sure it has 250k pots in the bridge position controls and 500k for the neck. I actually put 1meg pots to clear up the neck pickups some.

Hey man that extra wire is your string ground, it is what makes the slight buzz/hum go away when you touch the strings/tuners/bridge of the guitar.

It needs to have some insulation stripped back so that it makes good contact with the bridge when it is screwed down (just kinda sandwich it in there).

The other end which apparently wasn't connected to anything needs to have a little insulation stripped back and soldered to the back of one of the pots. Solder it to the same spot you solder black wire from the pickup should be fine.

Solder the white lead to the tab on the volume pot where you removed the original pickup lead and ya should be good.

Hopefully you won't have any phase issues, I didn't with mine so ya should be good.

Experiment with some different heights and see what sounds best/balances best with the neck pickup for ya.

I guess you already know but the rubber sleeves or springs that came with the pickup go over the screws, between the pickup and the bottome of the bridge.

Also you'll have to get the back of the pot pretty hot to solder the grounds on, not sure what iron/gun you're using. I like to use a little more power for the grounds and a lower wattage iron for the lugs on the pots if possible.

Thats all I know to tell ya for now, good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks.

Ground wire issue is fixed.

I got everything done and.. humbucker was dead.

So I put white wire to the ground and black to the pot and cut small wire of pickup and now everything is working

I'll let you know my toughts in few days.

If they were out of phase you did just the right thing. However it doesn't sound right that the humbucker would have been dead. Oh well the important thing is that they are working now. Do they sound okay together?

I couldn't be happier. SD STL-1 is just amazing! This is the sound I always wanted and needed. If you have Tele with basswood body don't hesitate to try one. Now I only need to get Telenator mod for humbucker
