pickup height

I accidently changed the height of the neck pickup on my Thinline. Is there a specified height or distance from the strings for this. This is my first guitar and I am still learning so it might seem like a dumb question.

I was interested in how Fender set the pickup heights in their Teles at the factory, so I went to the Fender dealer on Monday and took measurements. It looks like, for the most part, they set them 1/8" from the bottom of the string with the string fretted at the last fret on the bass side and 3/32" on the treble side, though they were sometimes 1/8" on the treble side, too. That was the typical measurement for both neck and bridge pickups.

When I set pickup height I start at the recommended setting and, generally, move the pickup down a 1/2 a screw turn at a time. If you go slow like that you will hit a spot that gives you the tone you are after.
