seriously, what has your post got to do with this thread's topic and ensuing discussion???

i respectfully suggest making a new topic rather than hijacking an existing thread.

Rob, I have to tell you, the more I use this pup the more I like it. You really knocked this one out of the park

[QUOTE=Rob DiStefano;3680332]yes, a strat pup without a cover will fit a tele pickguard neck pickup route.QUOTE]

I just tried putting a SD strat neck pickup w/o a cover in a standard tele pickguard (allparts bakelite) and it wouldn't fit. Now I am wondering if the Allparts bakelite guard is smaller, or the SD pickup is larger, than normal.

I think he meant the route fits and the PG doesnt.

and i route the tele pickguard to accept a strat pickup - either covered or string wound.

i'll say again ...

for the very most part, an uncovered strat pickup will fit into a tele neck pickguard or mounting ring rout.

observe ...

a strat pickup sans cover and a chrome tele neck pickup mounting ring ...

the mounting ring Easily sips over the pickup ...

voila ...

what will not line up are the pup mounting screws - the strat pup's mounting holes will be about 1/32" further apart than the mounting ring's pup height holes, OR the tele neck mounting holes drilled into the tele body - just pull those screws in a tad and all will be good. promise.

Since this thread started, I've met the man (Rob), and his doggies. Saw pieces of the p/us, but have not heard them yet. Until then, I can assure you, Rob is the real deal in guitar tech wizardry. And those dogs are mighty cute in person ...

I rec'd my Lion pickup from Rob a few days ago; got it installed last night.

I'm using it in a Road Worn Tele with a 280K Volume pot, a 250K Tone pot and a 0.022uF capacitor. Typical pedals and s blackface Fender 2x12 combo.

I dig the pickup. I've not gigged with it yet.

It seems the EQ profile of the pickup is fairly flat with some attenuation at the upper frequencies. The highs are 'fat' without the pickup sounding midrange-y. Twang at the low end. Very 'open' sounding pickup somewhat liken to (quite surprisingly!) to the middle position on the 3-way switch or maybe a low-output PAF. Clear but fat enough to compete well with the Duncan Antiquity mini-hum that's in the neck position of this guitar.

Someone mentioned loose rope winding - the craftsmanship of the pickup I rec'd is very high on all physical aspects of the pickup. Very nice work.

I like it. I love Teles, but love/HATE Tele bridge pickups. First rattle? I like it - a lot.

This compared to:

- Lollar J-Street
- Duncan Quarter Pounder and a few other Duncan models I can't rem
- Di Marzio Area Hot T
- Di Marzio Pre-B1 (this pickup is a lot of what I want, but not enough)
- Di Marzio Virtual Hot T (I like this one, but it's a bit 'caustic' sounding - aggressive highs, but not 'ice pick' highs... don't know how to describe it - you can hear it with drive here: http://www.youtube.com/user/chromepl.../2/htQ706vTMBo)

...and a few others I can't remember.

Mounted:

the lion pass-around trial has ended.

thanx to all who tried the lion out, and to those who bought theirs. i offer the lion to tdpri members on a money-back deal - buy a lion, try it out, and if it's not what you want, return it unscathed within one week for a refund.

i've had queries about the lion's design. i only build the lion one way, fat. kinda like the first fords - you can have any color you like as long as it's black. over the last few months i've spiked the turn count from 10650+ to 11000+ and this appears to insure the optimum vintage tele/esquire fat single coil tone and drive i want. this is based on a 250k volume pot and any no-load tone pot w/.022uf cap. the guitar, strings, bridge, whatever won't matter much if at all - yer playing, however, will.

soon, there may be a trial pass-around of the lioness, the lion's uncovered tele neck pup mate.

thanx everyone, hope this has been interesting and fun for you, it sure has for me!

Hi Rob,

Based on everything I've read, I am fairly certain I want to try a Lion Bridge PU for my Tele. (250k Vol Pot/No Load circuit) I have a Fralin 2% overwound in the neck position. Any idea if the Lion will mate well with the Fralin that I already have in place? I really like the Fralin 2% overwound Neck performance and tone, so I don't really want to change it. but I definitely want a bridge PU with more punch, attitude for rock/blues and overdriven tone. Not wanting as much country twang from the bridge as I want great blalance of clean to rock performance.

thoughts?

i can only vouch for what i build and test. i don't understand what 2% difference makes in any pup - that kinda stuff goes over my head. nor do i particularly care about tele neck pups as for me the heart and soul of a tele/esquire is the bridge pup engine. i build ONE type of tele bridge pup from the ground up, not two or ten different "models". there are TWO options - north or south top magnet polarity and white or black string wrapping. that's about it. i offer the lion for $65/shipped in the usa, and that includes a $60 refund upon it's unharmed and safe return in one week should it not be your cup of tea. oiy vey, such a deal.

the lioness is my idea of a worthy tele neck pup. it's uncovered (no, i will not do a covered version, but you can cover it yerself if ya like) and well wound with 43awg. she mates very well with her boss, the lion.

hope this helps rather than confuses.

I wound up buying the first pickup pictured in this thread. On New Years Eve I put Rob's Lion in my #1 Tele a 1983 52RI and did roughly 3 hour band practice/jam at the Victoria factory through a 35210 (tweed super).

Funny how you really have to try every combination. Rob's pickup was great in my 52RI. Sort of a SD Broadcaster on steriods. Originally it was in my MIM Esquire but it seems to do much better in my 52RI. I'm sure the amp didn't hurt either but good stuff.

Hopefully over the next few weeks I can get some sound clips.

Wow! After reading Rob's comments-and others as well-I do believe I'll be buying what will amount to the start of a pride (when I decide on which wood and finish on a new Tele build). After all you've got to have both a male and female lion to start a pride eh? Yeah I'll bet these pups will sound great going through a '68 tube SFPR.
