Neck Pup real muddy

Just like title says.. I got a set of Seymour duncan Antiquity II in my Tele. Love the bridge, but the neck is real bass heavy a little muddy sounding. I've read that depending on how guitar is wired makes difference in how neck pup sounds. I think its wired to 50's vintage which might explain why its so muddy.. Any suggestions would be great. It might just be the pickup.. If so I might start looking for something that's a little brighter sounding. Recommendations?

Check out Ebay for a CS Texas Special neck pickup or and American Standard neck pup..there both AlNiCo 5 pups..The 5s have that nice Glassy sound. Mixing and matching pups is a good thing in my opinion. Good luck

Heres my neck position @ 1:50 into the video..this is the CS Texas Special pups.

that would explain a muddy sound ... how does it sound in the middle position ??? have it modified to the modern wiring config before you spend your money on pickups !!!

Exactly, 50's wiring leaves the neck pup muted. You need to wire it to modern, or 60's, specs, then the tone control will work with both pickups.

I may just get a Dimarzion Twang King for the neck... I just put a set in a buddy's guitar. Love that neck pickup. Is their any special wiring instructions that I should know about when mixing Dimarzio & Seymour Duncan? I'm going keep the SD bridge.

You'll probably like the Twang King. I have a "Rumplestiltskin" Blues Special (no cover) in the neck of my other Tele and it is brighter and has more oomph! It's my fave' between the two. Had the stock Mexican pups in both b4 and they came out immediately.

Not sure about Duncan and DImarz, but, Fender/Duncan do not play well.
Have to reverse wires.

Before changing PUP's, reduce the C (Capacitance) -load on the PUP via a lower C cable. I find ~200pf to work well with most PUP's. Your amp may have C on the input. Check the schematics. That C should be factored into the total C-load. Seriously, C-load makes a notable difference. It's no different than a tone knob.

Installing a GFS Fatbody pickup and doing this to the pickup cover significantly livened up my neck pickup situation. The stock pickup was muddy even for jazz, IMO.

* The image is of boneyguy's guitar... which is where I got the idea.

One thing I did with my stock mim alnico v I believe was to just take that cover off. Scrape all that wax out. Had it uncovered for a while liked it, very very bright. I just put the cover back on. Sounds great actually. Taking all that wax out really cleared it up.
