Seymour Duncan Broadcaster "2" ?!?!
Those of you that use a Duncan Broadcaster in the bridge of your Tele may be interested in this.
I've used Broadcasters for years now. I love it. I adjust it medium-to-low in the bridge...it sounds a little more "air-y" to me. But sometimes I just want a little extra output. If I raise it up, it begins to get too ice-picky for me and the midrange turns to mush in OD mode ....and I do utilize the tone control quite a bit. So I emailed a product suggestion to Seymour Duncan for a "Broadcaster 2" with about 10% more output....but a tapped lead for retaining the original Broadcaster output. That way you could wire it up standard, then flip a switch or pull a knob and have just a bit more output. I also suggested a 5/2 magnet set up, to keep the highend in check (Broadcasters use AlNiCo 5 magnets) They emailed me back to say that they already make that, but they just don't have it listed in their product line up! It's the same exact specs that Seymour uses in his personal Esquire. You just have to have a dealer special order it for you, requesting "Seymour's custom Esquire Broadcaster". They didn't offer a price, but I've custom ordered pickups from them before, and for a custom wind single coil, there is usually only a $15 or $20 upcharge....which would make this pickup somewhere in the $80 range, I'm guessing. I'm going to try it.

I got one, I'll let it go too
Cheap.. e-mail me at tonemagic@lycos.com,
its 7.2k-to-16k-30k depends on who ya cross the wires, I simply found, the 7.2k to lack true Vintage tone, and the 15k and the 30k to be MUSH. and so loud it wipe the neck pickup out! I also have the Broadcaster,,, I LOVE IT-- mines not too close--- but it is close! BTW. adding wings ads MUSH.. sure it get louder but it ups mids. What you need is to--- probably just get that Broadcaster's magnets re-charged to full power, maybe call Lollar or OC? they would probably do it FREE...if you prepaid all return shipping cost, and removed the base plate yourself.??? |

For me....the standard Duncan Broadcaster tele bridge pickup would be around 7.6k...10% more would yield around 8.4k....not 16, and certainly not 30! I'm not talking about having two individual coils (which sounds like what you may be describing). I'm speaking of having one standard coil...with 2 hot leads...one at 7.6k (100% Broadcaster), and one at full coil (8.4k...or Broadcaster +10%). Quote:

hmmm...I've got two Duncan Broadcasters right now...one is about 8 years old, the other is about 6 months old. I can't hear the difference between them, in the same guitar (I tried it). BTW...I do know that comparing impedence readings from one pickup to another is not a good way to judge output (ideally, you'd want to do that in volts, right?)....but it works fine when speaking of winding a specific pickup a little hotter than it currently is (not comparing two different pickups).

humm... OK...
Hey there,
well what do I know?... I ain't nobody... I'm going to cut to the chase, I'm 100% sure if you fully charge one of those Broadcasters-- your quest will be over.. or as close as your going to get. even if you go the custom route. .. the tap would be cool, I would skip the Alnico 2's though.. they kill off a good " %" of that signiture Tele Bridge tone. Not that I care or think that I'm a big banana in the Music Industry, --I'm Not~ But just so ya know.. I've been a top pickup designer for 4 years at LACE, Creating some of their best sellers' ..etc.. while there, I've help thousands of guys too finally get the tone that's in their heads... I'm just trying to help you.. but you don't have to belive any of it. The Brodcaster pu has been put through a Dun- Aged process, The Magnets are degaused ( weakend), usally Too much for my tatse.. Seymour loves doing this to almost all his magnets, But he's been overdoing it IMHO... but that's just Seymour... and I Love him! He's GREAT! He's a good friend to me.. more power to him... I'm sure he's reasons for it are very valid. Iv'e honestly Cured 100's of complaint's very similar to yours by recharging the pups. ridding them of the de-gaussing or undercharging problems it creates. OOP's wing's = winds It just means' I'm 1/2 blind and big fingered, and I don't proof read my own scribble, or can I watch the screen as i write "I'm a Chicken peck typer" i have to look at the keys. and my time is always short.. so I'm on & off in a blink. and I'm probably the biggest offender to the english laungage here. LOL!-- If folks judge me-- I don't mind, Let them think I'm Forest Gump. I know who my real judge in life is going to be. LOL! Far as I have known..-- A Custom Tapped Tele Pup has been priced at $200.00 for the last 4 years, from Seymours Custom Shop. Save some money and Zap up one of those Broadcaster's to full magnetic charge. I've also found that the 5-2 works well in the neck, and is Not worth much in the bridge, It sorta dies in the bridge and leaves ya wanting. I also have 8k & 9k here that really don't do much good, clean or boosted. Seem's the 7's are the way to fly with a Tele. Call up Oc Duff or Lollar, hit them up for your answers, There stuff is IMHO some of the very best on the market today... and they will talk too you..While Seymour won't, (Marcela J.) will... Good luck ~Buck~ |

I do appreciate your comments. Quote:
I've had M.J. custom wind many pickups for me, and each time her results have been incredible. The last set of single coils I sent her (two non-working Rio Grande Tallboys for Strat)...she rewound them to my specs, with a 2 week turnaround. I've also placed custom orders for humbuckers, with nickel covers. I don't doubt that there are many, many, many pickup winders out there that make world class products, including those that you've referenced. It's just that I've had tremendous personal success with Seymour's stuff...and I've been burned by some of the other guys (who will remain nameless). So I'm a "Duncan man" for life.

In fact, last time that Seymour was in the store, he made the comment to me, "You guys have more Duncan pickups in stock than I do!" Mark stocks a ton of Duncan custom shop pickups too.
