Custom 24 - PRS Pickups
Hi guys,
I'm usually lurking in the 'tele home depot' sub-forum but I thought I would ask you lot this pickup related question. In a couple of months I'll be starting a custom 24 build, I have all of the components with the exception of the all important pups. What I want to know is what kind of pups they use and/or how to re-create a tone close to that of a genuine 24, without actually buying the PRS pups. Failing that I would be open to any suggestions you may have, baring in mind that I have only a basic understanding of pickup design. Cheers, Alex

To me and this is just my opinion I think that PRS guitars have a fake synth like tone that has never appealed to me. Maybe putting your own pickups in your build will help I dont know.

Its the pickup selections that make em sound different. I replaced that with a 3 way toggle and coil tap and mine sounds very good. If you want the gibson fender sound in one guitar then this is as close as you can get imo.

The custom 24 uses an HFS (stands for "Hot Fat and screamin'" seriously) in the bridge, and a "Vintage Bass" at the neck. IMO, they don't sound like that.
The problem with 24 fret guitars (I'm struggling with one now) is that the neck pickup is in the wrong spot. It's too far back in the scale length. This makes the neck pickup sound weird, and the magnet placement and pull also affect how the bridge pickup sounds. It's a rough road to get it to sound right. I ain't there yet. Look forward to a lot of experimentation. Sorry I can't be more help, but my 24 fretter is driving me nuts trying to find pickups that sound "right" in it.

Yes I do find that ALL 24 fret guitars have bad sounding necks because they are in the wrong spot. I love the neck pickup and this is not only PRS but all 24 fret's. Still though there is something about PRS tone I dont like.
