Need Cheap PU set

I now have a Gotoh tele pickup set on my partscastor, and they suck! I would like to replace them with a matched set, trad. bridge/HB Neck. I have always wanted Lollars but I can't justify the price right now. BTW I am a hack/suck ass guitar player. Anyone one have suggestions for good pickups on the cheap, wound a bit hotter than the normal thing.

thanks

I recently put a set of Mighty Mites in mine and like them a lot. Some say they are the same pups that come in a Squrie Standard Tele. They are Alnico5's. They get some good reviews and are low cost. I found mine on eBay for $20 each.

GFS (Guitar Fetish) tele pups also get some good reviews, as do these from Bill Lawrence - Wilde pickups. I plan to try them on a thinline I am due to receive tomorrow.

I've never tried them but I've heard that tone riders are pretty good for the money.

In what sense can a single coil bridge and a neck humbucker be a "matched set"?

I have a a rails type bridge (splittable) and a mini-humbucker (both from GFS) in a tele: the bridge is hotter than the neck and brighter; hard to think of them as matched.

Anyway, GFS sells many flavors of normal and overwound pu's for pretty cheap. The alnico oversized polepiece "fatbody" is a favorite for many in the neck position but it's not a humbucker.

Good luck,
Greg

Wow! I missed that SC - HB part! HArd to find a matched set like that. I guess the outputs could be fairly well matched and balanced.

Same or close Imp./Output. I can match 'em up mysefl, but I suppose I want them to be close maybe 7-9k. Not to low not to hot, also read yesterday that SC do well with 500k volumen pots? that was news to me?

Keystones, trust me look up the keystones they are absolutely the best pickup you can get for the money u spend. They sound as good as any more expensive pickup and for 68 bucks for the PAIR. I like the Keystones more then any other set I have tried period not in there price range just period....

GFS are pretty good for their cheapness, but the trebles a little harsh. It seems like they over charge their magnets.

They do! check out my thread "Single Coil 500K Pots" in the Pickup Forum.. At 500K its artificially trebly , but around 300-375K it sounds great.I go into detail there.

When you can get Keystones for $80 a pair, why buy GFS?

The thing about Keystones, however, if you are truly a suck ass player, is they will make your playing sound even suckier and assier, unless you bury it with fuzz or other heavy distortion.

On the other hand , they may inspire you to practice getting it right, so your playing becomes less suck ass and more kick ass.

I like my GFS pickups, but Keystones are in another league entirely. I also failed to notice that you were looking for sc/hb, but would still suggest trying the Keystones. You could always sell the neck pickup later and install a HB if the sc neck doesn't work out. As far as GFS, I have a Fatbody 7K bridge that I love, and I have Nashville Retrotrons that I love. I keep thinking that the Retrotron would make a good neck pickup match for the Fatbody, but they're in two different guitars, so I've never tried it.

I disagree. And trust me, I should know. My suck ass playing definitely didn't get worse with the Keystones. Then again, maybe it can't get worse.

I can honestly say that I became a better player, overall, after I started using Bill's pickups. You really have to clean up your act as they will expose every flaw in your playing. Sounds a little intimidating but I think it was a gift.
