Harmonic Design Mini-Strat neck pickup

I have just found out about these pickups (my bid for a used one on eBay failed to go through in time...) & I wondered if anyone on here has tried one?

http://www.harmonicdesign.net/allpages/teles.html

It seems like a great idea to me, so I would like to hear what you think of the pickup, if you have tried it. It would be even better to hear from someone who has been able to compare the Harmonic Design Mini-Strat neck pickup with a Twisted Tele neck pickup.

Thanks.

Have you asked them if its AlNiCo? The black one sitting on the Tele looks like it might have a ceramic magnet on the bottom. The Tele pickups they sell look like they might too.

That thought hadn't ocurred to me - the pic in the eBay advert (where I first saw the pickups) doesn't show any signs of a ceramic magnet.

Yeah the description says AlNiCo so no ceramic. They are up in the air a little on the website photos probably from the wires. You do have to watch out and ask questions on ebay in general,a lot of pickups have bottom ceramics and there's no mention in the write up and they don't show in the photo.

It's funny how the "alnico=good, ceramic=bad" myth keeps getting perpetuated when it comes to speakers and pickups. Your comment implies that you should stay away from it if it isn't alnico, without even considering whether they might be awesome pickups regardless.

Very good point. The magnet type itself doesn't mean much. I would even say it does not mean anything. :)

The magnet type and strength will certainly influence the tone of the pickup - but the ol' "ceramic=bad and alnico=good" saw simply doesn't float. There will be players who like the sound produced by either/both magnet types. It's an ear thang, and we all have different ears.

My comment doesn't imply AlNiCo is better,I just figured he would want to know what kind of pickup he was getting.I've seen a lot of pickups on ebay that don't tell the kind of magnet, and yes it does make a difference just like every part of a pickups design or there wouldn't be so many different p/ups.I like both myself.I have some Bartolinis that are ceramic that sound just as wonderful as the Abbys I just got for my Strat. And of course now there are the rare earth magnet p/ups

Harmonic Design makes great pickups. Some are alnico, some ceramic. -They're all good!
