Wiring a strat Pickup?
Did some searches of this forum, not sure exactly what I should search for.
I have a spare Strat pickup off a Nashville Tele. I replaced that position with a SD humbucker. I looked at the pickup, and there are only two wires...it's after midnight, and I just got it into my head that: I have a soldering iron, and if there are only TWO wires...maybe I could do this myself? The magnets are staggered, except one magnet sits flush? Can magnets be moved? or is it supposed to be like that? Are there instructions anywhere for taking off a rhythm/neck tele pickup and installing a strat pickup... for the electrically challenged? All I know is there is a Red wire and a Yellow wire. The bottom (or is it top) of the pickup there is a "triangle" that the wires come off. Knowing only that.... and nothing else about wiring, am I just better off taking the Squier to a shop and paying the 15 bucks? As soon as I post this, I'll be searching the internet. Thought I'd post this question incase someone knew of some directions off hand. Thanks. |

Strat pups sound great in the neck position of a Tele, and it's a pretty easy project. If you do the swap, you might have to enlarge the neck pickup cutout in the body, as the Strat pup is slightly larger. I did the swap years ago on an early MiM Squier Tele, and there was enough room for the Strat pickup in the stock cutout.
Also, you'll have to file the pickup slot in the pickguard a little larger to fit the Strat pickup cover & slightly slot the mounting screw holes, as the mounting screws are slightly further apart on the Strat pup. GFS sells Tele pickguards with a Strat pickup cutout in them, if you don't want to modify your existing pickguard. And in the Nashville Tele, that red wire went to ground, the yellow wire went to the switch, and the "triangle" points toward the bridge. Good luck! |

If the tone is weak or hollow when you are done (in switch position 4, neck and middle), you'll have to switch the red and yellow wires around because your Nashville Strat pickup (Tex Mex) is out of phase with the SD.
The poles (magnets) are suppose to be staggered. |
