Do I want the same pickups in each guitar?
I don't think so. As much as I love the 54's how come I don't want them in another guitar. Are you guys and Gals the same? I think each guitar should have its own sound.

I suppose if you need a backup guitar it should probably be set up as close to your main guitar as possible including pickups. Other than that, I'm with you. I don't want all of my guitars sounding the same.
I don't know if this qualifies but I do want to "Esquire" a Tele one of these days (it's so much easier than trying to find a real Esquire) and I'll probably use a Chandler Super 60 in it. That's the same pickup that's in my main Tele, and I just happen to have one laying around as a backup. I'm expecting a bit of difference in tone due to the lack of a neck pickup as well as the way I'm going to set up the switching. |

Different
I'd go with different pickups. If you have different guitars, there's no use in them sounding almost exactly the same. And there are lots of options, of course. If you're talking about Teles, there are lots of flavors of Vintage style pickups, strat-like neck pickups, P90 style bridges, humbucker neck pickups, and so on, to choose from.
Unless you're using one as a direct backup for your main guitar and you really want them to sound the same. |
