crazy buzzing on tone pot
so, my tele was working fine and I decided to mess with it because that is what I do. Anyways, all I did was shield the guitar because it was pretty loud for single coils. The grounding went well but now when I have my volume and tone at 10 no noise. If I roll my volume to 9 I get sound but it is REALLY loud. But the even goofier thing is that when I roll the tone to zero the hum goes away completely and the pickup selector works perfect the guitar is just pretty lifeless with the tone on zero.
So, what I'm asking is what is wrong? Also, something important to mention is that I tried a different style of wiring. (attached schematic) Changing the capacitor. From what I read Fender did this in the 50s but I'm sure someone knows more about that than me. Also, could someone maybe draw a diagram for me that would run the middle position in phase like a humbucker? I don't ever use the middle position but I would if the pickups were in phase. How would I go about doing that? TIA |

I suspect a short somewhere, or swapping hot and ground leads. If your middle position is out of phase, it sound thin and weak. If so you need to swap one of the pickups leads (hot and ground). You also need to move the ground/cover wire on the pickup. If you want HB function (i.e. hum cancelling) then you need a different pickup as one of them has to be RWRP.
Test with the switch/pots out of the guitar, as something could be touching the shield. |
