PICKUPS
I just got a HWY 1 which, as I understand it, has "modern/updated" pups. Can anyone recommend a set that is more authentic?

If you want to stay with Fenders the Nocasters or OV 52's are good for the vintage sound.
Before you change them try a few different heights sometimes thats all they need is to be closer or farther away from the strings to sound their best. You gotta find the sweet spot.

Yeah; those stock pickups are dreadful, aren't they?
What Mark says. I prefer the No-Casters over the OVs in part because they're quieter in use. But I have both. Another choice would be some Callaham special wind Fralin pickups. These are the great Fralin pickups, which are rewaxed and cryogenically treated by Bill Callaham. Very nice. Also put together a set of Broadcasters from Seymour Duncan (you may select the Antiquity form if you like). Actually, their are just a ton of guys who can provide this: Curtis Novak, Jason Lollar, O.C. Duff, Don Mare, Amafitano, Rolph, Stuart; the full list is a beauty. Although, sometimes the pickup needs to just get out of your way and let your fingertips do the authentic part, together with the right amp and settings. I really like this Highway One model with a set of Bill and Becky Keystones. Around $ 60.00 a set, these are arguably better than any of the ones I have mentioned and I use them a lot. |
