Any love for the AVRI '62 custom pickups?

I just got the bridge pup off of eBay and I'm surprised how good it is. Wondering if I should get a neck pup to go with it. Looking for that '60s sound.

Those are great pickups the matching neck pickup however is a little dark sounding I like the neck pup from the 50's-60's MIM Classic Tele its not dark like the 52ri and 62ri's are.

I will have to search out those.

In the meantime, how would you rate the AVRI '62 bridge pup compared to the custom winder's equivalent (Mare's Hayride, OC Duff's Buckeroo)?

I had OC Duff wind a set for me way back when he first started they were really good no experience with Mare.

Id say the 62 bridge is as good as a custom wind its just wire magnets and bobbins Fender pickups in the right guitar can sound as good as any of them.

So am I correct in saying that you believe that some Fender made pickups are on par with those made by custom winders? If so do you think the custom wind thing is part of the "cork-sniffer" syndrome?

I know exactly what you mean about "cork-sniffer" syndrome, and my own trials have me thinking the Fenders are just as good. Not naming names, but I've tried several boutique pickups and felt there was no advantage other than a wider selection. I settled on the AVRI62 bridge in my 52RI, love it.

Ive changed alot of pickups and depending on the guitar the most expensive aftermarket ones can sometimes be just slightly different not worth the upgrade or any different sounding than maybe changing the amp settings a little.

What gets me is so many peole remove perfectly good stock Fender pickups without ever even trying to adjust them or find strings they sound best with.

Alot of people change pickups to try to sound like another artist then they realize they still sound like themselves.

I have a AV '62RI bridge pup in a one piece Alder USACG body and it sounds like a match made in Heaven. Just like a real '62 should sound. Much brighter than say my AV '52RI with a CS Nocaster in it.

I replaced my 52Ri neck pup with a AV62 when the original one died. It's a little more present (louder and fuller) than the original.

There's plenty that's already been said here extolling the virtues of these p'ups, especially the neck ones.

I love mine to death-fat, funky, clear and responsive to nuance. The bridge is nice, too, but for me, the neck and middle position are where I live on my baby much of the time.

This thread has made me very happy! Thank you all! I am loving the AVRI '62 custom reissue bridge pickup I put in a '60s style partocaster over the weekend. I got it last week on eBay for $37 new. After reading these posts and some other stuff I went for a brand new AVRI '62 custom reissue neck pickup on eBay for $45 this afternoon. The comments about the "cork-sniffing" really really helped confirm some of my own suspicions, as surprising as they seemed. It's good to have them reinforced.

I like that I am using the pickups Fender designed and made for specific guitars. The fact that they are named '62 makes it that much easier to choose which ones for which guitar.
