Describe to me the P90 sounds

I have ordered a Agile 3000 with 2 P90 soapbar and I have no idea what to expect. Since I didn't have any P90 equiped axed, I felt compelled to order one. Can you guys describe me where does the P90 fits compare to single coil / humbucker ?

In one word: fat.

I love me some P90s. I have a Hofner Colorama Special with 2 of them. They have less bite than regular single coils, they are more responsive to different picking techniques and brighter than a lot of humbuckers. Very nice well rounded sound with great mids.

P90s are the middle road to me. They're fat and drive like a humbucker but retain a clarity of a single coil. They are not noiseless like a humbucker unless you get a noiseless set.

Take a nice tele set, add a touch more output all around.

They really growl when overdriven, you can get really nice, fat bluesy cleans without mud. It really makes me wonder why humbuckers ever became popular!

That sounds really good. This is exactly what I am looking for.

Pete's tone on The Who's "Live at Leeds" pretty much covers it for me.

It's called g.a.s. There are 12 step programs for it, but no one around here seems interested in curing it.

you can go here:
http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/mer...en=p90-pickups
and get sound files for different P90s... though they might spoil you.

Biting treble high output fatter than Tele single coil more punch.. Can be noisy but this can be alleviated in the middle position (both P-90s on) by wiring them differently, but I'm not sure how it's done. If anyone knows how I'd appreciate the info>

the two will be wound in opposite directions and have the polarity of the pole pieces reversed. rwrp - it's a consideration before buying rather than a wiring change after the fact.

I don't really think it is possible for one person to describe a sound to another person in such a way that the second person can truly understand.

superhand says they sound fat. I've played a lot of P90 equipped guitars and fat doesn't mean anything to me. I'm not critisizing here... it's just not the way I would describe a P90.

You just need to hear it for yourself. Go down to the local guitar store and try them out.

Only one way to describe it!

Decent overdriven and clean P90 tones here:

But I think this is a great example!

Because they bucked the hum. P-90s seem to ooze it.
