i dont know what i want...
so i am building a thinline right now and was thinking about pickups. its got an ash body with a flame maple top, and maple neck and fretboard. I was kind of basing it on jonny langs benedict and thinline custom. i want a p90 in the middle but im not sure what humbuckers. the black thinline has bill lawrence 500's but the benedict just says it has vintage humbuckers and i dont know what kind. i was also considering pearly gates. i want 4 conductor wire for tapping. i know very little about pickups so any help would be appreciated

The Bill Lawrence 500`s are really good pickups. Never tried the Pearly Gates. The combination of wood you have there tends to make me think the guitar will be bright sounding by nature. Do you want offset or accent its natural tone ? Look at the specs of the pickups your considering. There is boat loads of good pickups out there now. And pickups are a very subjective discussion , you can have hundreds of brands thrown at ya.I would try to find something that 1. Matches the guitar 2. Matches my taste and desired tone.
Good Luck Throw some pics up when ya get it done.

thanks donnie, i guess im just not exactly sure what i want. im not really going for the traditional tele twang, but i still want a bright sound, but with "bite" i guess you could say. but i would still like a decent clean sound, which i heard pearly gates isnt exacly good for, but idk. and im not really too familiar with lawrence 500's but i know that dimebag darrel used them and thats not really my style, but jonny lang uses them and that is my style so... i would really like to know who makes the pups jonny has in his red/yellow benedict thinline. all benedict says is that they are vintage '50 humbuckers.

The pick up configuration you mentioned hb/p90/hb is the same on the Benedict Bluesmaster . And those are either ( you can choose ) Seth Lovers Or Duncans. There are a lot of guys out there right now that make great pickups. You can call or email people like GFS and tell them what your looking for they help you out. Bill Lawrence has been sick lately but if you call and get his wife Becky or any of the guys working there they will help you. I have dealt with Bill and Becky several times . Never, Never have I been let down.

yea the bluesmaster is exactly what im talking about, i just couldnt remember the name. thank you, i did look at the seymour duncan seth lover model pickups (i think thats what you're talking about) and was considering those too. i would really like to have four-conductor wire on whatever i get. they dont come stock like that i dont think but i suppose i could contact them. the website said that that is an optional mod. but i am trying not to spend too much, preferably no more than $75 a piece if thats possible but i also dont want so settle for something i dont like.
anyway, i have a vision, i want to have a switch for each humbucker that can split coils. i also want to either change series/parallel or reverse phase...or both. if what i want is even possible (i really dont know, im fairly new to this) it would have i think 22 different pickup combinations, and would involve a pup selector switch, 1 vol, 1 or 2 tones, and 2 dpdt on/on/on switches.... i think.... do you know much about that? again im no expert, i've had my strat style guitar apart and tinkered, but nothing like this. this is my first build. this may be over my head but i dont care, its too late to stop now and this is one challenge i will not back down from. so anyone know of a place i can get good easy to read wiring diagrams? i can find diagrams for common/stock setups but this is far from stock or common, which is partly why i want to do it so much, sort of my own one-of-a-kind thing. |
