Bridge pickup wind direction?
Hello Folks, I am rewinding an original bridge pup from a Squier Affinity tele and a bit confused. After research most sites says anti-clockwise wind was the original direction of wind.I take this to mean, looking on top of the pup, that the wire is wound on anti-clockwise and if the wire tabs are at the bottom then the start would be to the right?
On the Stewmac site the article and video on rewinding shows the start on the left tab and wound clockwise. I understand that the black wire goes to the start and white or yellow goes at the end. My question is does it really matter or not? Will it make a difference to the sound? Secondly my pup has no steel plate underneath but the magnet is a bar type underneath, can I put a plate under the magnet and will this make a difference to the sound? Do I put it between the poles and magnet? Your thoughts please,by the way the pup was shot anyway so I stripped the windings and thought I would try it on my home made winder using an old sea fishing fixed spool reel. Thanks Savvy |

Anyway . . it does'nt matter . . if it's connected out of phase with the neck pickup . . just swap the wires. Tonal there will be NO difference at all.
If you want noise cancelling in the middle position, make sure the magnets are opposed to those in the neck pickup. If you just want to wind it historically correct . . i don't know . . Here is how PREEB, a highly acclaimed guitar-builder and member of this forum does it. Start RIGHT and rotate CCW)!

Thanks kman900, I sort of thought that was the case,I have an idea that the neck pup won't enter into the equation as it is a humbucker and that is one reason for winding my own as the replacement I got is pretty weak compared to the neck bucker as I expected. Its all good fun anyway
I have just built and fitted a little booster trying to achieve something like Andy Summers? Savvy |
