wiring problems with squier protone fat tele
i just picked up a 90s squire protone tele in fantastic shape, only thing is it had an extremely microphonic neck humbucker
problem #1 - i picked up a seth lover, popped it in and it is microphonic too - not nearly as microphonic as the other one, but still pretty noisy if you tap on it with your pick - is there something in the wiring that could cause this? problem #2 - after replacing the neck pickup with a seth lover, it's now out of phase with the bidge - it's a single wire with a braid shield, the bridge is 2 wire here's what i've tried.... the ground wire from the bridge pickup, bridge plate and output jack were all connected to the volume pot, the ground from the original neck pickup was connected to the casing of the 3 way switch - i tried wiring it the same way and was out of phase - i tried moving all grounds to the casing of the switch - still out of phase - i was going to try all ground to the pot, but i don't think the wire from the seth is long enough what am i doing wrong? - i heard that it may have to do with the direction that the pickups were wired? - do i have to replace the bridge with something to match the seth lover? |

Don't know whether to answer at TGP or here
To reverse the phase you have to swap the hot and ground, i.e. the hot lead goes to the back of the pot and the ground/shield lead goes to the switch lug that the hot one used to be. That's only 1/2 the problem if you have the pickup cover as the ground/shield. Depending on the pickup, you may have to do some modifications to reverse but retain the shield. How many wires on that HB? It might be easier to change the phase of the bridge pickup instead, usually only one solder joint change if you have a base plate. |

thanks for the help......here's the progress (or lack thereof)
the humbucker only has 1 wire and a braided sheild i tried swapping the 2 wires on the bridge and nothing.... swapping the wire and sheild on the HB fixed the phase problem but now theres a grounding problem with just that pickup (neck and middle position) - what should i try next? |

If your neck pickup only has one wire + shield, I would suggest swapping the bridge pickup wires. It should work just as well as swapping the neck pickup wires.
I'll try to find the thread where how to do this was discussed. EDIT: see this tread. |
