Esquire pick up question
I'm considering building my first tele. It will be an esquire model. Question 1- Back in the day were the bridge pick ups the same between an Esquire and lets say a 52...and if they were different how did they differ.
Question 2- What pick up available today would you reccomend for the Esquire. I've thought about the Lawrence Keystone, Florance Te 50's, Duncan 54, or a Lollar Special??????? Thanks |

My understanding is that some individual pickups tended to measure hotter than others, and that to the extend practicable, Fender used the hotter ones for the Esquires and used the more underwound ones in the Broadcasters, then "nocasters" then Telecasters they sold.

I think they just wound a whole bunch, and then sorted through and put the hottest third of the supply in one bin, and the more vintage remainder of them in a second bin. Try not to get the bins mixed up. Reminds me of the lady across the street in Massachusetts with the laying hens, when I was small. The largest 4 dozen eggs she got each day were tagged large (whether they were or not), and most of the rest were mediums, and she gave away the really small ones. The eggs were not real consistent in size; she did worry too much about it. The relative resistance of similarly made pickups from the same batch is a fairly good indicator of what they'll sound like relative to one another. But don't forget what Mr. Bill Lawrence says: You can tell just about as much about a pickup based upon a resistance reading as you can know the intelligence of a man by his shoe size. I think this activity at FEIC was charming but "approximate".

I have a Fender CS Esquire and liked the stock pickup except for the hum. For some reason this pickup seems to have a little more buzz/hum that the other single coil pickups I've used. (FYI the ground was OK)
Anyway, I put one of these in and have never looked back. http://www.curtisnovak.com/pickups/tel-hc.shtml IMHO this is a great PU for the Esquire. |

I put the bridge pickup from a Baja in my partscaster Esquire. Sounds great. Be sure to go with the "cocked wah" wiring scheme.
