Dyna Sonic in Baja neck position?
Hullo hullo all...
Thanks to having picked up a second part-time gig writing reviews for one of the local weeklies, I'm finally gonna have some $ for Tele tweaking in the next couple of months. Yay! Anyhoo, finishing my Baja before moving on to my trusty '76, just 'cause it needs less stuff. One thing I'm considering is buying and installing a (preferably old, but perhaps one of the new, period-correct, non-2K) Dyna-Sonic in the neck position. Anybody tried this? Anything weird or difficult in mounting something like this on a more-or-less stock Tele? The sound I'm going for is something Giant Sand/Howe Gelb-ish, and I've seen recent footage of Howe with a Tele, and lots of him using Gretsches with 'Trons and Dynas, as well as him playing an acoustic with a Dyna mounted on it, and they all sound amazing. Granted, most of it is because Howe's a friggin' genius, but a lot of what I'm hoping for is that 3-D tone he gets, snappy and twangy clean and gloriously ragged but clear dirty. A little bit about this guitar, for purely scientific reference purposes: It's a recent Baja tele. S1 and 4-way stuff removed. Kinda beat. Most of the finish was sanded off the neck when I got it. Kinda wondering if I should get it (the neck) refined. Currently has an empty slot at the neck and an OC Duff "Nancy" bridge pup, very slightly overwound...otherwise stock. Some other changes I might be making: Considering having the neck shaved down a little and re-shaped to more closely resemble my '76 Tele's. Since it's already down to bare wood anyway. Replacing the stock brass saddles. Thinking about going with comped steel ones. Also, gonna drill the back of the bridgeplate for topload as an option. That's about it, I guess... |
