Pickup differemces
Hey guys
Assuming you have 2 pickups, both the same magnet, with similar amount of windings, how much can they differ and what can cause these differences. I was thinking and possibly, the potting, lacquer and winding tightness.... Cheers Mike |

Maybe Don Mare will chime in - he seems to have this figured out.
I've noticed that different Tele bridge pickups with the same magnet type and DC resistance can sound very different - one can be bright and thin, one can be bright but smoother and fatter. |

+1 Wire and wind definitely contribute. Potting does too - especially with humbuckers.

I used to think resistance told you how hot a pickup was, but then I've heard lots of examples of 5K pups that are hotter than 10K pups. Then I thought the magnet type told you how hot the pickup was, but then, yup, example of a AlNICo II pup being hotter than a AlNiCo V pup.
Conclusion: where's the science? Isn't there a formula for hotness? Otherwise, why even report things like resistance? |
