humbucker in the bridge - tele size, or full humbucker?
I've decided (yet again) to mess with my #1-- a beat up alder Fender Highway 1 tele body with an Allparts FAT nitro neck and esquire pickguard.
I'm trying to decide on which pickup I should hot-rod it with--- a Dimarzio D-Sonic or a Super Distortion T for tele. If I go with the Super D for tele, I won't have to route anything, and can just replacing the existing pickup that's on the vintage ashtray bridge with the Super D. I already have the D-Sonic, but would need to pick up a tele bridge that fits a humbucker (Gotoh makes a nice one for about $50), and do a little routing. I'm not opposed to this as I had this guitar set up as a Jeff Beck tele-gib for a while, and when I converted it back, I just use wood epoxy to fill the bridge pickup routing back to a regular tele shape. Still, using the Super D means that should I decide to go back to a regular tele pickup, it would save me the trouble of refilling the cavity, etc. And since this is my #1, I know I'll be changing it around someday again. Buying a new pickup would only be about $15 more than buying the humbucker bridge, so cost-wise, it's pretty even. So should I bust out the dremel again and place an order for a new bridge, or spend a little bit more $, save alot of time and get a tele-size humbucker? |

I think I'd just go with the Super D for Tele - just in case I wanted to switch back in the future.

I thought about it more after I posted today, and the more appropriate thing to do would be to get something tele-sized to avoid re-filling if I want to go back to a tele pickup later.
Plus, I did a little more reading on the D-Sonic and the Super D, and for a fat, raw, somewhat gritty rock sound with more "grind" to it, the Super D would be a better choice. Apparently, the D-Sonic is very big sounding, but also more focused, warm and compressed. I have a strat with dual humbuckers in it-- I'll just keep the D-Sonic in the drawer in case I ever want something hotter in the bridge of that strat. |
