IS IT WORTH IT?

Hi folks. It may seem a daft question, but I have modded my Affinity Tele to 5 way switching,PAF in the neck and reversed control plate etc and have an AXL by EMG in the bridge. Thing is I fancy having a go at rewinding the original bridge pup to experiment to match the neck pup and try to get a more vintage sound, but it is of the type with a bar magnet underneath(I know cheap) The poles pieces of the pup are enclosed within the plastic flatwork etc.The thing I am asking is :- is it worth trying? bearing in mind I am having difficulty finding things like Stew-mac kits over here!
My idea is to try different winds and try them out as I still have the AXL, which by the way is a passive pup, to replace if all goes t**s up.I can get the wire here and can make my own winder as I have lots of time on my hands(retired)
Thanks for any comments. Barrie

You have mutually-exclusive goals here. You can't "match the neck pup" (meaning in output, I suppose) when the neck pickup is a humbucker AND "get a more vintage sound". WRT the "vintage" part, this is particularly the case since the bridge pickup you will rewind seems to be built differently than the old Tele pickups (see below).

There's nothing inherently cheap about having a bar magnet underneath, it's just a design choice on the part of the pickup manufacturer. Almost all humbuckers, for example, have a bar magnet underneath. But in original Tele pickups, the magnets were the polepieces and there was a copper plate underneath the pickup.

Sure, why not? If you've got time on your hands and appropriate wire, all it will cost you is a tolerance for tedium while you rewind the coil. Projects are fun, go ahead. Let us know how it turns out.

Good luck.
