Tonerider Rebel 90 or PAF

Hi all,

I am currently looking for replacement PUps for my old Aria PE-60 Les Paul type - still having the stock PUps (MMK-45s). The MMK 45 are a little bit too hot for my taste (they measure 12 k both), the neck is too muddy, the bridge lacks some details too and has some unpleasent highmids.

What I am looking for are pickups with a vintage tone with less output and more treble but still a warm and meaty when driven.

Shall I go for Tonerider Alnico IV or the Rebel 90s? I read a lot of good reviews for both of them - just need some more opinions to get more confused .

Roland

You might also consider the GFS Dream 180's. Nicely detailed sound and no mud.

From what you describe, the A4's should fit the bill quite well.

Sure thing.

The Rebel 90 is designed to replicate a P-90 in a humbucker casing. While not 100% of the P-90 sound, it's a fat single coil sound that can chime and do nice cleans but can really bite and roar with the right drive behind it.

The Alnico IV is supposed to replicate a vintage styled PAF. It's going to be a bit fatter but will really retain that thick sound when driven. Plus, it will be noiseless. Lindy Fralin does a lot with Alnico IV magnets.

Think of the Rebel 90 as a single coil on steroids. Think of the Alnico IV as that nice warm fat humbucker sound from the old Les Pauls. I recommended the Alnico IV as it will probably suit the big sound of that LP styled guitar. If you really want to be versatile - stick a Rebel 90 in the neck and an Alnico IV in the bridge.

Thanks for all ideas and hints, I think I'll pull the trigger for the Alnico IVs.

Only question left: shall I stick to zebra PUps?

Or shall I go for nickel covers (I made a quick PU swap in GIMP)?

I will order the pickups in the UK - is there someone how has either experience with Dangleberrymusic or with Axesrus?

Thanks Roland

I've ordered loads of stuff from Axesrus and it's always been of excellent quality and arrived in good time. I ordered my Tonerider Hot Classic bridge p'up from them, and had it within 48 hours of submitting my order. My one experience with Dangleberry wasn't good, and ended up with the order being cancelled.

So, if it were me, Axesrus all the way.
