Good pickup combination for Tele - help
I was thinking of putting a Seymour Duncan Vintage Soapbar in the neck and a Lil 59 in the bridge on my MIM Tele. Would this be a good combination in terms of similar output? Would they sound right on the same guitar?
I'm looking for a Neil Young type thing. It doesn't have to nail it, as he has a LP and I've got a Tele, but I'm going for a similar flavor. Another idea I had was to put a Gibson Burstbucker V in the neck. I've played on those before, though they were in a Les Paul, and I loved the tone. The problem is I don't know what kind of bridge pup would match that output level and sound right. If neither of those options sound like a good idea, I know I could be perfectly happy with some Fender Tele pickups, and if I go with that, I'm trying to decide among CS Texas Specials, CS Nocaster, or the new SCN pups they're putting in the deluxe series, although I'm not even sure if they're available yet. If I go that route, I'd love to get something close to mid 90s Tom Petty, if that makes any sense at all. Good Lord, that was a loaded post. Any thoughts or opinions on anything I mentioned would be extremely helpful. Thanks! |

You might consider a SD Phat Cat for the neck if your Tele is already routed for a fullsize HB -- it pretty much nails the P90 sound in a HB housing. I love the one in the neck of my Tele with a SD Jerry Donahue Tele lead in the bridge. I think the Lil 59 would match the Phat Cat well in terms of output, but I prefer the traditional Tele bridge pup sound. I really like the Fender Nocaster set, too, although I think they sound best in a fairly light guitar.
