Q
I have a 2009 american standard pickup in a partscaster esquire. Its kinda trebly, not so ice pick but more then I like. It sounds good both high gain and clean. I think I can have better. the am standard has no base plate. Do you folks think a baseplate would help? What sort of pickup do you think might "warm" it up? its an ash body,maple/maple allparts neck.

Have you tried adjusting its height?
Too high and they get ice-pick, so logic suggests lower for warmer sound. But a tele/esquire bridge pu is supposed to be bright and trebley.

Then again....I normally rip mine apart and mess with the internals every time I change strings.

1st: i'd try lowering/adjusting the P-up's angle...1/8" can make a huuuge difference tonally...
2nd: i'd swap out the cap, even for one of the same value as there can be a +\ - 10% variation.... |

Hi all
I don't mind taking it apart as I am the one who put it together. I have taken the pickup height all over the map. It actually sounds good. I want something warmer is all. I have an esquire type that was built for me with an SD broadcaster pup in it. As soon as I can pay it off I will have that to try. The Am standard tele pup does not have a base plate and I was reading on it and wondered if maybe a based pup was the way to go.

re baseplate
Actually I think it will sound warmer without the baseplate, when Fender came out with the Am Std Teles they went for a more modern sound, that's why the Am Std and some other Tele bridge pickups don't have a baseplate.
The plate refocuses the magnetic field, to my ears it's what is part of the twang factor for a Tele. There are lot's of different Tele pickups you can try if you are looking for a fatter tone, Duncan Quarter Pounder, lil 59 for Tele, some of the GFS Tele get good reviews, really there so many good sounding pickups to choose from. I have a Harmonic Design S90 Tele bridge pickup, it's a P90 style, sounds great, still gets a good clean tone but excels for blues & R&R etc... |
