50's vs. 60's Tele Pickups

Guys I pretty much know nothing about guitar pickups. I know that they are wound, something about Alnico magnets being in them, and that they have out put.

That's it.

Honestly guys, I'm an fool when comes to this, and I need an education.

Can any point me in the right direction?

Every year has a slightly different output but one of the main differences is alnico 3 (50's) vs alnico 5 in mid 60's. This is extremely general. There could be hundreds of pages in the exact differences but were not getting into this here.

Chris K alludes to this, but let me reiterate: with old guitars, the thing you have to beware of are overgeneralizations.

So when you read things like "1962 Strat pickups are 5.85kO" and "1963 Strat pickups are 5.95kO," remember that those are intended to represent average figures for a given production year. Actual mileage can and does vary, within certain limits.

Some specs will be pretty standard (you won't see non-staggered magnets on a Strat before mid-'74) but other specs can go all over the place (I have seen black bobbins on Strats as late as 1969).

if youre talking about sound, i believe 60's pickups are brighter on average. listen to some Merle Haggard recordings from the 60s, then listen to some Gene Vincent or Ricky Nelson from the 50's. They wound them a little less in the 60s, thus producing more Twang.
at least thats the way i understand it.

When I think of 50s I think flat pole, +7K, A3 and 60s I think slight stagger, -7K, A5

These are broad generalizations of course
