Wiring problems replacing SP43 with SK T90
I have just received a Steve Kersting bridge pup, a T90 (42 wire), to replace my Fralin Steelpole 43. I was looking for a "better" match of the bridge pup with my glorious sounding Fralin Unbucker in the neck position. The contrast between the Unbucker and the Steelpole 43 was too big for my ears. Nothing wrong with the Steelpole though.
But.....I have ran in to some wiring difficulties. The SP43 has three wires (2 ground; one hot?). The SK T90 has two wires. Where do I put them? When I opened the control cavity to rewire, I noticed that the white wire of the SP43 was soldered to the bottom of the volumepot and the black wire to the switch. I find this strange, because I always thought the black wire was ground and should be attached to the pot bottom??? Yes, I know, I am no electronics buff... The SK-T90 seems to work, but when I turn the tonepot I hear "static"/a crackling sound. So something isn't quite right. I have now soldered the white wire of the SK-T90 to the volumepot bottom and the black wire to one of the lugs of the switch (just like the SP43 was except the extra ground wire). So...what else? I have a push-pull pot (6 poles) on the tonepot for splitting the Unbucker, but use a regular Tele switch (8 lugs; 4-a-side). My bridge seems to have copperfoil below it to ground it. I can't find a wiring schematic on the net for this layout and would appreciate some help with this annoying situation. Thanks! addendum: ok; I noticed that when I touch the strings or the bridge the "crackle" disappears. This would probably mean that there is a grounding problem. Or not? There is a ground wire running from the volumepot to the tonepot. There is copperfoil under the bridge and I think the wire that runs from it goes to the jack. So how can there be a grounding problem? Or is it something different? I see I have 10 views but no replies yet. I hope somebody knows what is the matter. Cheers Erik PS I have not only changed the bridgepup but also the bridge itself with a Callaham bridge. Could this be causing problems? Come on you guys! |

Sorry Erik, I don't have an answer for you. However, I'm responding to keep this thread near the top. I've got an SK T-90 coming in a few weeks and I'm sure I'm going to have the same question. I hope you get a response. I know that fellow TDPRIer Brad has one in his Tele, maybe he can help you. Please let us know if you figure it out on your own. Good luck

Thanks Geddyleedog
I appreciate your response.
I am not the type thats likes to hype a pup, but I am pretty content with the sound of the SK T90 so far. It has 42 wire instead of the 43 wire of my Steelpole that used to be in there. It matches better with my Fralin Unbucker than the SP. I do like the SP, but when I switched from neck to bridge it was too big a difference for my ears (YMMV). My Butterscotch "Micawber look-a-like" Tele is finally becoming the axe I had in mind. The wiring layout of my DIY Tele is different from the "regular" Tele setup. I guess your Tele doesn't have any copperfoil under the bridge with a ground wire attached to it? As far as I can see now with my Tele, that's the only ground wire running to the jack. Your T90 will probably sound just fine. I'm thinking of running a ground wire from one of the pots, probably the tonepot that is giving me the "trouble", to the jack. Maybe I'll even disconnect the current groundwire that is coming from the copperfoil. I guess this copperfoil grounding isn't working as it did with my SP...? cheers Erik |

You might try....
running a ground wire from one of you pots to the bridge. Fan the wires under the bridge so the bridge stays flat. I did this when I had the Lil 59'r in the bridge and kept it there when I changed ti the T-90. It's very quite now with no buzzing.
I love the T-90. It mixes very well with the Seth Lover bucker I have in the neck. I also use deaf-eddies 5 way wiring and the series out of phase tone is simply killer with some overdrive. The standard parallel middle position with the T-90 and Seth is a thing of beauty.

Thanks Brad
I love the T-90 too. Wonderful pup and a nice combo with the Fralin Unbucker (people really should try both pups!).
I have e-mailed with Steve Kersting about my situation. He suggested reversing the black & white wires. In the current situation the black is "hot" instead of ground. I might need to reverse the wires on the Unbucker because the notch setting could be out-of-phase. If there is any crackling after that, it might be a (broken) ground or pot question. We'll see. I'll keep your solution in mind ...thanks a lot, I appreciate your help! :D |
