Roadworns come with Tex-Mex pickups.
I have a Nashville Telecaster that had those and it sounded great. I changed them to Original Vintage only because I wanted the old (50's) Tele TWANG. I also don't play distorted so didn't need the POWER of the Tex Mex's. Your question is very hard to answer ! Changing pickups will give you a different sound. No one can say it will be better. I hate to beat an old horse but: There isn't such a thing as a better pickup YOU have to decide what tone you want. There are HUNDREDS of pickups available for you and you can read HUNDEREDS of opinions. Let us know what sound (tone) your looking for/wanting and you'll get some good feedback. What is it you don't like about what you have ?? Do a search on youtube for some different pickups as that's a good way to actually hear the different tones and not go by what someone else claims is THE BEST. Welcome to the can of worms |

I have two stock teles... one a mia 2007 the other a roadworn tele
- 2007 mia tele - sounds good unplugged... full range. Pickups are okay but tend to sound thin at higher volumes - roadworn tele - very acoustical sounding... very midrangy. Pickups are okay for rock as the lack of high end helps... but for clean really lacks upper mids and treble. I think some of the lack of high end is because the body and neck don't have a thick poly coat. I have no technical reason or experience for this but did try swapping the necks and the mia 2007 lost some zing with the rw neck and the rw tele got some zing with the mia 07 neck. I think the mia 07 needs better pickups so the sound hold together at higher volumes. But not sure is I should invest in pickups for the roadworn because I would probably like 30% more (pick a number) upper mids and high end from the rw. I did change the cap and that added a little bit of treble. So not sure if the tex-mex pickups are constraining the sound... or thats just the way that guitar is going to sound based on body wood (alder) and pretty much an unfinished guitar. |
