"nashville" ala Brent Mason wiring question

I've got a problem and I'm hoping there's a good answer to it.

Here's the situation:
I have SX STL50 I converted to a Nashville with separate independent volume for the middle strat pup. I can have as much middle pup in the mix as I want with the standard 3 way tele switching for bridge and neck.
The middle pup is totally independent and is only in the tone circuit when both volumes are up, when the middle is by itself it is out of the tone circuit. All 3 pots are 500k.

The problem:
When I have both volumes up and tone full up the sound is pretty dark. It almost sounds like I've rolled the tone off a bit by rolling up the volume of the middle pup. Bridge by itself, nice and bright...middle by itself, nice and bright...bridge/middle together sounds very dull and I have no idea why. I haven't owned a strat since I was a kid and don't recall this problem.

Any ideas out there?

That's what I started with, then I went to a 500k because the two volume pots in parallel is equivilent resistance of 250k. It didn't change the tone at all by switching from 250 to 500 on the tone pot.
