Any love for the pre-ceramic MIM std pups?
I was looking for better high end (older country sound) and gave a pre-ceramic MIM standard Tele bridge pickup a shot in my used-to-be Nashville. I think it sounds much brighter (better to me) than the Tex Mex it replaced.
The Tex Mex read 8.5 and the MIM Std reads around 7.4, is this why it has the brighter sound? The two pups look almost identical, but the Tex Mex had 2 black screws in the bottom, the Std. does not. I think all I need now is to mount a baseplate under it to make it a little more focused. Anyone else think these MIM std. pups are ok? |

I love the older MIM neck pups. I do not care for the bridge, due to its rather scooped mids and icepick tendencies, I believe attributable to the lack of a base plate. I have baseplated them and it is a definite improvement in sound. FWIW, I have also taken apart and metered a number of the older MIM standards and the AM standards and they appear to be the same pickup, except the leads are often a different color. Same approximate DC resistance, same plastic bobbins, wire, magenets and chrome cover. No experience with the "TexMex" version.

I have a 2005 MiM "special edition" ash Tele that had the old alnico pups. My preference was the opposite of the previous poster. I kind of liked the bridge, but I thought the neck was sort of generic sounding. I put in GFS Li'l Punchers, which were quieter, but I missed the Tele character, so I put in a Tonerider Vintage Plus set, which I like a lot. But I think that the stock bridge pickup had some character. It would be interesting to hear it with a baseplate though.
