Screw the Pickups....down
I'm redoing a bass guitar. I've got a SCPB-3 Quarter Pounder single Coil pickup, but I don't want the pickguard, so instead of screwing it to the pick guard, I want to screw it to the wood at the bottom of the pickup route.
Where do I get the appropriate screw, with threads to match the Pickup, with a wood screw tip, or is there something else.

Measure the height of the top of your pickup over the top of the body before you tear it down. Measure the overall height of your pickup and the thickness of the pickup's base. Now measure the depth of the pickup cavity and the thickness of the body. Make a sketch of the pickup in the cavity so you can see two things: How high above the floor of the pickup cavity does the top of the pickup's base sit? How thick is the floor of the cavity? You see where I'm going. You now know how much screw is out of the wood and the most that can be in the wood, so you can figure out the screw length you need. Take the current pickup screws that engage the threads and get wood screws that are one size smaller. Your new screws must clear the threads, not engage (trust me, you will want to be able to raise and lower this pu, right?). Use short pieces of surgical tubing on the screws under the pickup to act as flexible spacers to hold the pick up against the screws. |
