Mini Humbuckers

I'm thinking of putting a Gibson Mini Humbucker into the neck position of my b bender. I was wondering if anyone knew what the spacing is, pickup height? or do I have to do a little woodwork?
I don't have to worry about the width because I have a swimming pool routing, probably will have to cut the pickgaurd though.

I've been considering a mini bucker for my new project guitar... I bought a body on ebay..It was listed as a mexican tele body...it has a humbucker route. It was origianlly candy apple red...then was stripped.

I also bought an allparts tele neck...complete with klusons and a "fender" decal. soft "v" etc. hopefully it will arrive tomorrow.

I'm considering a "Keefcaster" an esquire or maybe the mini humbucker...I'm also wondering about string spacing on the humbuckers and how deep does the cavity have to be?

I had a semourized mini in the neck of my mij 50's tele and I didn't need it to be any deeper than the normal tele route that it had. I ended up puttin a nashville route in it so I could do the Mason style wiring. Turned out cool. Great sounding pickup, very jazzy.

Now I am wanting to do one with a CC rider.

Check the SD website for their pickup dimensions. The route on an American Series Tele is 0.75" deep. The SD mini-HBs (SM-1 and SM-3 at least) are about 0.1" deeper, so they work fine. The output of these two mini-HBs should match a standard Tele bridge pup with a little extra beef, like a Fender Nocaster or SD Broadcaster. I have a Nocaster and a Seymourized SM-3n mini-HB (the 4-conductor wiring makes it easy to match polarity and phase) in an ash/maple Tele, and they are great together. I'm thinking about another mini-HB in an ash/RW Tele, but I'm not sure which bridge pup I want yet. Perhaps an SD Jerry Donahue or a noiseless option like the Vintage Stack lead? I'm also interested in the SD Antiquity line, but I'm not sure whether a Ant. Firebird neck and Ant. Tele flatpole bridge will match well in terms of output.

Size of Route

I have a MIJ 90 Tele Deluxe with two strat pups and a tele bridge, and I was thinking of a mini-hummer for the neck. My guitar does not have the swimming pool route. Are you folks saying that I can install the mini-hummer without having to route out additional wood? Just wondering.

I have a Les Paul Deluxe style humbucker, with the individual pole pieces, not the firebird style like the SD SM-1,SM-3. I'm not sure if the dimensions are the same for these two styles.

String spacing? See my avatar

It's pretty close.

You may want to buy a replacement pickguard from an outfit like Warmoth who will cut the pickup hole to your spec, and preserve your original pickguard in case you wish to sell the guitar.

I'm not sure what tone you are after but just beware that if you are looking for a warmer/middier/jazzier tone from your neck pup, a new Gibson minibucker may not be the best choice. They are quite bright and somebody else's version of the minibucker may be more what you are after.

Unlike full-sized buckers, they are very clear.

I use mine with a SD Broadcaster in the bridge.

minihumbuckers

Hi guys! I love the tone of minihumbuckers, and no noise. The Antiquity Firebirds sound great. Output for the bridge is 7.55kohm, and about 6.5 for the neck.

I got a pickguard from Warmoth. Maybe its just my imagination, but it seems just a smidge off with the position of the neck pickup. Maybe 1/8" short of where it should line up with the harmonics. Doesn't seem to be a major issue tone-wise, but that's something I wonder about. Does anyone else have any experience with pickguards? Where do you get them?

Since you're in Memphis,

I had TK at Strings & Things cut a standard Fender pg for an SD SM-3n minihumbucker that he put in my American Series Telecaster. The two mounting holes for the Tele neck pickup were left showing, so he glued false mounting screws in them to fill 'em up. It looks like some exotic mounting system, but it resulted in a perfect fit of the pickguard to the body elsewhere. The Fender route for the neck HB is not exactly at the 24th fret, but it sounds great to me.

The actual finish is called Purple Dye, and was done by Roxy (I think - Inertian?).

Not that I leave the guitar out in the Australian sun but I notice that the dye exposed to the light is now fading (in a pleasing way) whereas that under the pickguard continues to be a lush massage parlour purple.
