"Fatter" "Rounder" "Thicker" still "Twangy" Tele pickups?
Hello all. I am looking to possibly purchase a new set of pickups for my CV Squier. I really like the neck pickup, but the bridge pickup is just a little shrill to my ears. Would like to have a little "rounder and deeper" sound out of the bridge. ala Brent Mason and Brad Paisley. I guess what I am saying is it doesn't have to be pure vintage, but I do like a little TWANG!!
Would prefer to try and stay with something in the GFS line to keep the costs down. I would like to get a matched pair and replace the neck pickup while I am at it, but would be cool with just the bridge pickup as well. Here is what I have been looking at: 1.) GFS "Cool Vintage" XL Lil' Punchers Set. 2.) GFS Fat Body Tele Set, and possibly the "Overwound" Bridge P/U And as little background I play some country guitar, thus the love for the TWANG, and I play blues as well. Love the Tele tone for the blues. What do you all think? Any other opinions? Thanks Brandon |

I think Brad Paisley uses LF Blues, isn't that right?
And about the Dimarzio Pre-B1, can I still get the twang with this pickup? Would it sound similar to a Fralin Blues? Key word being similar. What would be the differences? Again, I still want my Tele bridge P/U to sound like a Tele bridge P/U, just with a little more meat. Thanks. Brandon |

Here's a clip of the GFS Cool Vintage Li'l Punchers XL in a MiM maple neck ash body Tele:
Li'l Punchers However, to me they didn't sound quite Tele enough, so I took them out and put in a set of Tonerider Vintage Plus, which are very articulate, snappy and twangy. John

Tonerider Hot Classic. Almost as cheap as GFS and sounds almost as good as my Fralin Blues Special. ALMOST.

Not tried the tele ones, but they get great reviews and are GREAT value .... keystones!
I got a set of the Strat pickups and they are great, I would say they what you are describing you want but the quack is there rather than the twang due to it being a strat. Next time I replace my tele pickups they will be on the top of my list along with Joe Bardens ( but they are expensive so not relevant to this thread) Cheers BMF |

Hi,
Roland here, I place 2 EMG-SAs on my solid mahogany partscaster and an EXB tone pot, it's sounding great! You actually have a tone choice, a regular tele twang with the tone pot all the way back (left) and a choice 2 to 10 for boost in the low and high frequency range and with the mids gradually dropping-off. |

Here's a clip of Toneriders Vintage Plus to go with the Li'l Punchers clip I posted above. I love the Toneriders, but some people have told me that the Li'l Punchers clip sounds better. I disagree, but tone is in the mind. When I swapped out the Punchers, I also installed a shielding kit and reversed the control plate so that I could do volume swells with my little finger. Both pickup sets are recorded through the Tweed Bassman model in PodFarm.

Bill Lawrence Keystones are around $75.00 for the set and have some good "tonal body" to them and still can twang very well. Very nice pickups IMO, worth much more than what they charge for them.

Try a Duncan Vintage Stack - it's a Single-Coil-Size Tele bridge that's two single coils stacked on top of one another. The copper baseplate and orientation of the coils gives you some humbucker qualities without losing the Tele twang.
Certainly will give you a little more warmth. Also, the Duncan Alnico II Pros are a tad warmer than stock Tele pickups. Oh....no, not Seymour here or any relation. And I only have a few Duncans out of many possibilities, but I think mine do what you describe you're after.

I actually JUST ordered...........
The GFS Alnico Fatbody Neck Pickup and the GFS Alnico 10K Overwound Bridge Pickup. Hoping I will like them. Hoping I don't lose too much twang! I don't think I will. Thanks for all the advice and opinions. They were greatly appreciated. Brandon |

I believe that all sets come with proper wiring instructions if you get lost.

maybe you should go with Seymour Duncan Hot for Tele lead STL-2, its got bass, mids, twang, and plenty of sustain.

instant fat, round & warm tones: play with the shoulder of your celluloid pick and roll back your tone knob on your guitar. Works every time... no exceptions. Vintage SD pro Alnico II's help too. But most pick ups respond well to tone knob tweaking on guitar and amps pretty well.
