Lowering poles on Strat PUs--?

Has anyone tried pushing down the G and D string poles on staggerd Strat PUs? I seem to remeber hearing about heating the PU and getting the wax soft and then puhing on the pole--did I dream this or has someone actually done it? Those strings are driving me nuts.

Lowering poles on pickups...

I wouldn't recommend trying to lower the pole pieces. You might end up with a broken winding. Of course, the newer pickups might be wound differently than older pickups. I've heard you might be able to apply a small amount of heat via a solder iron(low wattage), and then carefully push down on the pole piece.
I like the staggered pole piece pickups, but some pickups I've seen have the pole pieces too high, which might be the case with your pickups.

Take care,
