That's basically what the John 5 tele is. It's not bad but sometimes I feel it's limiting to dial in certain tones.

You can always go for two volumes and one tone.
A small mod to a control plate- takes about 1/2 an hour to do.

i've got two volumes and no tone controls in my tele deluxe. i like it mainly for the simplicity, but there's also the benefit of a 'purer' and less filtered sound that appeals to me even if it's barely noticeable.
i've got the hot lead of my pickups going to the center lug of their respective volume pots, then a wire runs from lug 3 of each pot to the switch and then from there to the output. other than the ground connections, that's all there is to it. i think by connecting the pickups to the center lug (2) rather than the outer lug (3) you eliminate the problem of both pickups shutting off in middle position when the volume is turned all the way down on one control. |

I think it would make more sense to use a single volume and a blend knob with a center detent so you don't have to mess with both volume knobs to get the right mix. You could use the switch for series/parallel, in/out of phase, or fixed tone caps.
