I have an interesting mod on my Washburn HB35 (335 clone). I have a master volume, master tone, 3-way pickup selector switch, and a toggle switch that engages a blend control. When the switch is on to activate the blend, you use the pickup selector to choose the dominant pickup in the mix, and then use the control to blend in the other pickup. That mix can then be turned up and down with the volume control (not possible with a standard two-volume control blend scheme), and the tone control is always active. The one downside is that you lose the ability to set one pickup at full volume and the other at a lower level.
