p-90 query

I've been playing a few great guitars with p-90s recently, most notably a 70s Les Paul deluxe which has completely demolished my "I don't like Les Pauls" stance...

As a complete novice when it comes to pickups, I'm wondering if it's possible to get a set of tele-sized p90s that will fit without making holes in my guitar? Or do they just need to be big? for some reason "p-90" comes up with no results on a forum search, so I thought I'd just bite the bullet and ask!

I have a Kinman tele with a Harmonic Designs Super 90 in the Bridge and a Z90 (humbucker size) in the neck.

Harmonic Designs are quite hifi sounding compared to the Lollar P90's I have in the ES295, which are rawer and less tamed.

There are pickups that kind of cop the P-90 vibe, but a P-90 sounds the way it does because it's designed that way, and a significantly different shape will have significant effect on the performance...

Cheers, Tim

Rio Grande makes Tele sized P90's. I believe they're called Dirty Harry's.

Harry Haeussel BigMag for tele (hand made in Germany)= very close to P90. but then you only get a small amount of twang with a P90 in a tele, so maybe you have to stay with true tele pups. i 've gone this small trip already...

p90's

I've got 3 p90's in one of my teles and the sounds from it are really good.

I'd have to agree with Tim. The p90's its own animal but if your feeling brave they sound fantastic in a tele body.

I put a p90 from gfs in the neck of a guitar, it's great. a squier h2, and it dropped right into the humbucker route. you may not need to route at all.

I've had GAS for the Squire tele that comes stock with 2 P-90s thats selling for about $230. I already have a somewhat normal tele with GFS fatbodies in it, other guitars with HB's and others with single coils. Now I want to add a P-90 guitar.

P90

I love P90's but I think a Tele should stay a Tele and P90's should be on everthing else

I have four Tele's and P-90's installed in three of them in varying combinations. I love the size/weight combo of the Tele body with the bluesy P-90 sound. One has 2 Fender Dove's, standard sized vintage voiced P-90's that sound very nice, but your guitar has to be routed for them. One has a Duncan Phat Cat humbucker sized P-90 in the neck, which is a great sounding pickup. The third is an all mahogany Tele with a Harmonic Design Z-90 in the neck and a S-90 in the bridge. I will say the the mahogany/HD combo does not sound like a Tele at all, but then I wasn't looking for Tele sound in that one, more of a Les Paul Special vibe. Obviously a P-90 equipped Tele isn't going to cluck and twang like a regular Tele, but if you want something a little different sounding they are great.

PS This is my first post - really enjoy reading the forums

..and howdy to ya!!

Tim said it best, a P90 sounds like it does because of its design- maybe you gotta bite the bullet and get the router out!!
I love the sound of a LP Jr... just hate playing 'em (sausage fingers and short scale don't really mix!!). So I put a SD P90 in my Ibanez Blazer... a guitar connoisseur (I was gonna say "corksniffer", but that may be too inflammatory!!) may look down on such behavior, but it gave me the bark I love, in a guitar that I can play. And it stayed in tune!!!
