Got'a SD Donahue in the
bridge of a Japanese tele and I love it. I don't know what the NP is but it is muffled and muddy. Anyway does anyone have experience matching a neck PU with the JD. And it doesn't have to be a SD and I'm not really wanting to spend a hun on one PU.

Hello and welcome to the TDPRI! I don't have a JD model but all 8 of my teles have seymour duncans in them. My first thought was a SD alnico pro II. I checked their website and sure enough it's what they recomend. It's a great, smooth sounding pickup, should be about the right output to match your JD, and can be bought new for around $62 on ebay usually.

Try the Alnico Pro II before turning it into an Esquire...it sounds really good with the JD. The JD is a freaking monster of a bridge pickup....surprised it doesn't get more love around here.
Set the AP2 height low for starts. You can remove the cover too if you think it's "muddy" but you might find that it's fine. It's a fine pickup too.

Thanks for the replys. I have been a Strat player until this Tele was given to me with the JD in it. I love this Guit. and the JD is a big part of it. I just wish I liked the neck PU better. I didn't know you could take the cover off the neck PU, is it worth a try?

I've got the AP II in the neck with a JD in the bridge of a Nashville tele. I think its a little dark, but it really depends on the amp. If you are playing an amp with a bright clean channel, its really versatile. Its pretty dark if I play it in my Champion 600 that has no tone control. If you have a darker amp, go with and Alnico V, but I would stay with Duncan so you don't have to modify the pickups to be in phase with each other, which you would need to do if you got a Fender pu.
