I have a few guitars that are all stock pickups. That said I've recently decided to take the plunge and experiment with some upgraded pickups. My guitars are mainly telecasters, CIJ or MIM Classics with one USA tele. I'm starting with the Esquire which I'm putting a Seymour Duncan Broadcaster pickup in. If I like the difference I may do a couple more. Some sound great to me as they are so if it ain't broke...

Nowadays, I simply do not buy a guitar unless it sounds fantasic! Why bother?
I have been around the block enough times to know that a set of great pickups will do nothing to save a medicore guitar so, unless it sounds terrific as delivered, I'm not buying. On the other hand, when I build guitars, I throw in any set of pickups I have around and I listen. Then I determine what would be the best choice. But, if the guitar doesn't sound great with the pickup I throw in there, I'll dismantle it and change the neck or something, then start all over again. Lots of fun! Especially when you hit an awesome combination and get it just right!

The more I look around at other possibilities for PUPs, the more I think that it might just be easier and better to stay stock. THe original PUPs are part of the guitar in the first place, and like some of you have noted, why buy the thing if you are not completely happy with it. I own a MIM Tele that came with one stock PUP and one Li'l 59er. I am thinking of changing the neck PUP, but the more I think about it, why not change the Li'l 59er and just get Fender PUP. It is cheaper than getting a boutique pickup and I will get a genuine Tele sound.
I suppose if you own one with stock PUPs you just need patience to get your sound. I have been learning slowly but surely there are a lot of things you can do with volume and tone knobs on the guitar. |

'83 telly has a Duncan Broadcaster in the bridge, stock on the neck. Bridge was changed because of microphonics, as another poster noted on his telly. The neck OTOH, is just a fabulous pickup on this guitar-I probably play on that pup 70% of the time.
Strats I have all have their original pups in them, and my partscaster has all sorts of pups in it-still can't seem to get this one right, though... Franc Robert Back Alley Blues Band |

My MIJ Classic 50's is back to stock after a few years with EMG's in it.
I don't like having batteries in my guitar, and never really liked the look of the EMG's either. Now that I am playing with a clean sound all the time, and without stompboxes, I much prefer the sound of the stock pickups. I wouldn't mind trying a set of Kinmans though....
