Bridge and bridge pickup mounting

So I got this snazzy new pickup for my old (80's) Fernandes Tele - and when I went to mount it - well the cavity is too small for the plate on the bottom. Does that happen often with clone-tele's ? Should I just get the dremel out & route ?

The bridge on that guitar is a traditional string through, 3 brass barrel setup. I was thinking of replacing it with a 6 saddle bridge at one point and bought a clone replacement. Maybe not so much a clone as a 'modern' replacement though. This is not an ash-tray - more like a heavier piece of steel bent in an 'L'. I find that the replacement seems to be slightly wider as the string holes don't line up exactly and the bridge it self seems to locate the bridge pickup slightly rearward and leave a bit of the cavity exposed.

From thiat I'm guessing that there are two (or more) fundamental styles of Tele bridges and that they have different geometry for string spacing & mounting. So what should I be buying if I want a 6 saddle replacement ? Is there any standard ?
