Not yet, but I have a set coming for my homebrew Tele - hopefully - within the next two weeks. I was originally going for a 4709, but after a bit of consulation with DM, he suggested the SST.

i gave the Sport T a long look on my recent build. ended up going with a 6.8K Nancy-style, but it was a close call.

I have a Pine Esquire body coming from Jaydawg, and after talking with Don Mare, he recommended a Super Sport bridge pickup.

Yup, I've got the super sport set in one of my tele's. The neck is very strat like. None of that muddy, muffled tele neck thing. Maybe another way to put it is I would use a standard tele style neck pup for jazz comping and mellow stuff. I would use the super sport neck for rock and pop comping and blues leads. The bridge is rich and cutting. Its sound more microphonic than any other bridge pup I've had before. I think that's part of the magic!! This pup made me start an Esquire build. Untill now I didn't think just a bridge pup would cut it. Now I see that with the right pup you don't no stinkin' neck pup. All in all the super sports are the best set of tele pups I've tried which includes Lollars, Fenders and a host of other lower cost pups. Now, with that said I also have a Nancy set, Sweet Rev. Z set, and two esquire pups waiting for homes. I hope they all are as good as the super sport set.

p.s. Chris, your gonna love that bridge pup. Like I said, its the reason I'm building myself an esquire now!!!

What a problem to have: so many great pickups that you need to add new guitars to put them in

I also ordered the Super Sport set to put in my Baja tele. Was originally thinking the 0038 to go with the Fender Twisted Tele neck, but Don suggested the SS set based on my amps, style, etc. Can't wait to get them. Also going to take out the S-1 and just use the 4-way.

I've got a set...

I have been the proud owner of a set of Super Sport Ts since Monday 4/14. I want to post a full report, but need to wait until my amp gets finished, which is going to be awhile now for financial reasons. However, I have been playing the SSTs through a Line6 GuitarPort hooked up to my notebook, and they sound far better through that than any guitar that's been played through it before, including a Kinman equipped strat and a Parker Les Paul clonish thing.

This is good there's a ton of Super Sport T's ordered apparently! DM said that he's gonna make a batch "soon" so in 2-3 weeks we'll all be posting reviews.

I think mine say 7.2 on the baseplate. On my set the high E pole is completely flush, while the others are just a hair above.

"Super Sport T-Set"
The big T-Sound - a blast from the past - this is our big, full, fat sound, highly complimented by our blues purist types!
--Bridge pickup is 7.4k alnico-5
--Flat pole pieces
--Neck pickup is S-Telly with an *upgraded* nickel-silver cover for more transparency.

I just wanted to report back - I installed the Super Sport on my Esquire and OMG this thing is absolutely KILLER. The other 2 pickups I tried in the Esquire were the Kinman Broadcaster and a Fender Nocaster. Both are great sounding pickups I have used in other Teles' in the past.

I honestly can not remember a time I have put a new pickup in a guitar and had so much excitement. Clean tones: roll the Tone Control up to 9 or 10 and you have some sweet sparkle goodness. Stomp on your Overdrives (Lovepedal Eternity and a Lovekraft Chupacabra Rat) and roll the Tone Control down to around 6 and get some of the best Fat Rock N Roll tones from Keef to Gibbons. I did a gig on Friday night playing through my Blackface '64 Princeton Reverb and there was so much harmonic content and wonderful playing dynamics I played at the top of my game all night long - VERY INSPIRATIONAL.

I am really thinking now about swapping out the Abigail's in my Strat for the the Strat Super Sports.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Don Mare Super Sport Pickup. Seriously - I LOVE this pickup!

Peace,

James

Did you use the screws and rubber that came with? I noticed the screws are longer then the stock Tele...I didn't use them because I prefer slothead. Also how microphonic is it? I haven't played mine through my twin cranked yet but mine don't seem any more micro than my Fralin stock tele.

No, neither. I've got springs in the Fralins and tubing in the Mares...Like I said though I haven't played them past 5 on my Twin...They sound great though! Very similar to the OV Fender bridge but with more sparkle and they respond more when you dig in...The OV Fenders just seemed kinda mellow.

My set don't have that talking-thru-your-amp quality; I emailed Don about that, and he said that he's generally making them a bit less microphonic than before. From his website:

Quote:
Normally, the degree that I strongly suggest is moderate to avoid unwanted squeal. If you can handle squeal, we can add more microphonics at your request, so please specify when placing your order. Currently, we take out the squeal and leave in the good microphonics. Adding more microphonics risks annoying squeal and does not add any more beauty (in our opinion).
By the way, he's got a new sample of the "Graf Airship Two" model posted here.

I decided to go for Don Mares latest creation, "The Tweed Monster"
It's around 7.9k to 8.1k Don first made these for Dale at Glendale guitar because Dale wanted to get some of the treble off the bridge.

Then Billy Gibbons recently played his black & white Esquire at 2007 NAMM.
Check out the Billy Gibbons NAMM 2007 youtube clips.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zcvd8h0YqrM

Don was getting calls for that tone and he came up with "The Tweed Monster".
I got one of the first ones Don made, he engraved #001 on the copper plate.
This pickup has more bark and bite then the Super Sport Bridge and in my Victoria 45410 it enhances That Tweed Sound.

Man - Billy G sounded pretty good and had a great PHAT tele tone but Jimmy Vaughn just completely blows - I mean , was he just drunk ?

That was TERRIBLE. ( I always thought he was cool in the T-Birds - what happened ?)

GE Smih sounded pretty crappy too - and I NEVER say stuff like this. Am I just in a bad mood or something ?
