72' Custom Club .... Wide Range

Is there any of you using one of the Custom Telecasters?

A 72' Custom Telecaster Reissue or original Custom with one Wide Range Humbucker and a stock Tele Bridge?

I split the neck pickup with a Push Pull pot on my MIM reissue and it sounds great. I used the Neck Pickup Tone pot. It wasn't that hard and it's really cool.

You get a Strat type tone out of the neck position with the neck tone pot pulled up - It sounds different than a stock Tele neck pickup. You can always push the pot down and get the Full humbucking tone.

The whole thing can be easily reversed back to stock because there are no permanent alterations done to the guitar. The cool thing is that even with the mod it looks stock. Works for me.

I can't believe I'm the only one who plays these Customs. I know it's not traditional but they've got the Tele thing going - it's just got a bit of a twist to it with the WRHP. I didn't like the way they looked when they first came out in the seventies, but when the reissues came out, I looked at them in a whole new light. They're now.
Come on Custom owners I know you are out there.

With all those pots you could do...

a tap for the humbucker

a series switch

a phase switch

and have room for a no load tone pot...

*scratchs non-existing goatee...*

I might have a new project!

WOW Guitarmole-Is that a custom Paintjob or what>Looks like a Hotrod.
That Bigsby looks great. Did you drill six holes in the back lip of the bridge plate and graphite or lube the holes for less friction for the Bigsby?

I have a 72 Deluxe RI and two Thinlines, and I now have a CIJ Custom (in US blonde) on the way shortly. I might end up selling my Deluxe... this purchase is definitely gonna cost me at least my Highway 1, but I'm jonesing for this Custom real bad. The blending options with the single coil and bucker will be a lot of fun.

How do you guys find the stock bridge pup in the RI?

Heck, it seems like there's a new Custom thread everyday! The more Custom players the merrier! It's a great model that should be more popular than it is. I hope Fender keeps making it, and I still hope for new US made production line Custom reissues. I like them as is, except my MIM's middle position is out of phase.

The middle position on the Custom is great! The fact you can blend with volume and tone is a plus. The stock bridge Pickup on my MIM is a bit brite and a tad less out put in comparison to the WRHP but thta's what it's all about. 2 completely different sounds and a wonderful blend in between. I have a beefier bridge pickup that I want to try that is 20% overwound which may work well on this guitar although I didn't like it on my traditional style Tele.

Is there actually talk of an American reissue in the works?
I bet there would be enough interest to make a run.

I'm also thinking about using an overwound pup in the bridge at some point, but I'll see how the stock one works for me. Anyone know what type pots (250K?) are used in the reissues.... and the originals?

I saw a US made Telecaster Deluxe (custom shop) that I think was on display at NAMM, but I haven't heard anything about Fender making a new run of Customs. I don't even know why they would bother in either case since the cunife magnets used with the original buckers cannot be replicated.

Thanks! I might play around a little and see what 500K pots do if/when I decide to replace the bridge pup.

I got the reissue in January and I love it! It's the "Keith Richards" one. Loved the look of the guitar ever since I saw Richards play it in the movie "Let's Spend the Night Together" and I finally got it.

I have an MIM RI. About two weeks ago I switched to 500K pots on the neck volume and tone. It's a big improvement. I'd highly recommend it.
I left the bridge components at 250K.

I don't have one, but I do have a story about one. A friend owns one, and has had it for 25 years, since he was 16. He had worn the paint through on the body with his arm. Anyways, his house was broken into while he and his wife and kids were sleeping. They stole a camcorder, guitar amps, a strat plus that his wife had just bought him for Christmas, and his prized black '72 Custom. We got a list of the serial numbers, and fanned out to all the local pawn shops. Lo and behold, 2 weeks later they showed up in one the stores that we had been to, and he got his gear back.

Why sure a Squier Tele Custom is welcome in the thread but it looks like it has 2 humbuckers.
The Custom Telecaster and reissues with the WRHP in the neck and a standard Tele single coil in the bridge makes them pretty unique. But there all good.

Hey Bartman - NICE amber on that neck . Sunburst/maple my personal fav........

500k on the vol and tone for neck pickup... Well that's what Gibson does for there humbuckers so there must be something to it.

I have owned a ri '72 Custom (black like Keef's) since 2001 and I love the versatility out of the thing. It has great range and it's a nice change of pace with the humbucker at the neck; also the middle position is very warm. The only thing I changed was the bridge pup, I put in a noiseless Seymour Duncan Vintage Lead Stack. I want to put that original pup back in place in about 10-15 years or so, just because.

I would have preferred a standard tele bridge and bridge pickup but heck for $199 what can I say... I spent about 2 hours dressing the fret ends...

I really like the seperate volume and tone for each pickup, that adds a lot more tonal variety.

The bridge is a dual loader (top and back) so I smoothed the toploader holes with a file and it seems to be working pretty good. The biggest problem with intonation is due to the crappy job I did of cutting the nut which will probably have to be fixed in the near future. The bridge also has the early 70's 2-slot saddles which works really well with the Bigsby. The slots help keep the strings aligned when using the bar or doing extreme bends since the break angle over the saddles isn't as steep with the Bigsby installed.

Don't have a pic of my '72 Custom RI handy, but here's one of my '72 Deluxe RI anyway:

Yes, I am aware of the differences between the re-issues of these and the originals, however, I like the re-issues, as is. I'm able to get really good sounds with my Marshall and Ampeg half stacks and these guitars. They are definitely my fave Teles! I have a Squier Tele Custom, as well. All of these have the black finish.

i think the straight sans serif "custom" was used for a few years on the originals, and all the reissues (japan and mexico) use the script...not sure if the script differs between them...

Nothing wrong with Rosewood. Just a different flavor. Great headstock picture. Is your Custom a reissue or an original? MIM or MIJ? I think the original later models had the "Custom" like yours.

Interesting on the rosewood. I didn't think they made them that way... are you sure it is all original?

Here's my custom Tele that I based on the Custom and Deluxe models.

I used a PAF reissue humbucker, as I prefer these to the Fender WR humbucker. I had the pickguard cut my Warmoth, used a rosewood strat neck (inspired by the Deluxe), relocated the switch to a place that would not be in my way, and eliminated all those pesky extra knobs :)

Not exactly a 72 custom, but like I said, it was inspired by.

Still doing some of that great artwork? It's great to see you still slingin' a Custom. Still have the Muddy Waters? I just sold mine.

Hey Jackson Jackson, If it works for you that's cool. Still hints the Custom Tele look.

Beachhead, what kind of bridge SD pickup are you using in the bridge position?

72 Custom

My first electric was a 70's Tele Custom. One of the few guitars I let go that I wish I still had. It's the reason I'm a tele guy now.
