SG Club!

Never has there been a more versatile guitar that still says "I rock".
Country, blues, slide, Gibson's best seller for a big reason.

I bought an SG Standard last summer to mark turning 40. Fantastic guitar. I love the 490r/498t pickups that everyone seems to yank out of them. I did put an RS kit in there that really opened things up. The tone controls are much more useable now, to me anyway.

It can do it all.

When I think "SG", I think of Frank Zappa. Although he played a lot of different guitars over the years I automatically picture him playing an SG when his name is mentioned.

I've built 3 SG style guitars over the past couple years. Here are some pictures.

A heavily modded Epiphone SG. Bill Lawrence L-500 pickups. RS pots, one push-pull to split the coils, one push-pull to reverse phase. Russian PIO capacitors. Before I made these changes, the only thing it would play was AC/DC, swear to God. I couldn't play anything else. Just AC/DC. Once I made the changes, it plays everything else now.

I've got a copy SG, its a great guitar, classic design and they seem to be more consistently good than their big brother the LP.

This is my Faded Epi. I have upgraded the pickups to the Classic 57/57+. It sounds and plays great.

Good Call on the SG revival threads over the years I've a bunch of 'em.
For years they fell out of favour w/me for some reason started to sound too mushy sounding to me...and then I rediscovered the the SG with p-90s. Especially the recent reissue of the SG Batwing pickguard Special other wise known as the SG Classic.
The Classics when compared straight up w/ the old specials definetly look and feel like a more sophisticated guitar than the late '60's vintage ones...of course the tunomatic bridge and stop tailpiece, articulate fret work and deep neck angle certainly class up the act from the originals that feel and look a bit clunky in comparison.

I have an older epi with neck binding, and a feded SG in worn brown.
One of 'em needs a new nut.

I really wanted Mark's SG, but the timing wasn't right. I did eventually get one.

i've got a '67 sg special. awesome guitar, though it always seems like i could easily snap the neck clear off. middle position can actually get quite twangy with the 2 p90s.

Back in the day I've owned a few small pickguard SG standards yhou know the ones with the Maestro harp tailpieces and the slight no block heal at the neck joining the body, made 1967 or before.
Trust me your right on as far as it could easily snap of in your hands I've had it happen with a little bump on the headstock, or having it fall over while leaning up against the amp during a break. I'm talking about the Gibsons with the set necks.
Be REAL CAREFULL those model's necks bust off really easily and when it does you just stand there looking at the mess for about 5 minutes trying to figure out how it happened, getting around the fact that it actually did happen, and you're gonna' react to the situation while all the people watching you and are anxiously waiting to see how the reube/sap who just broke his guitar in half by mistake while trying to look cool is going to behave with egg all over his face...
It's even worse if you forgot to bring a backup.

Oh, yeah......I have a SG Standard....LOVE the guitar for so many reasons. BUT.......
one day I had it leaning against an amp and it tipped over...(on carpet!). Two tuners on the right side popped in two. No damage to the neck (Phewwww!) but it took me forever to located new tuners with the green tulip tips. When I found them....I bought 6!
Yeah....fragile guitar.
