Squier Standard Owners Club

Just to join in with this great new direction.

How about us Squier Standard owners. Post pics and descriptions of these under-rated, highly playable and good value guitars.

I'll start

It looked like this at first

Then I modded it. Hotter neck pickup opened out cover, 4 way switch, and punched metal pickguard.

Currently it has Fender amp knobs and a pearl white plate, but that could all change again....!

Post your Squier Standards!!!!

2004 Standard Fat Telecaster which is kept in open G.
Originally looked like this

Have changed one or two things.
Squier 51 neck, Tonerider AC4 humbucker, Wilkinson WVOB bridge pickup, black 5 hole guard, all new electrics. Everything except the neck and knobs came from Axesrus.

Axerus wiring kit w/CTS pots, waxed cloth covered wire, Oak 3 way switch.
AllParts knobs, bought on ebay because AllParts UK is permanently back ordered for 95% of their inventory.

Tonerider AC4 reversed to see what it sounded like. Frankly I can't really hear a difference, but the fiddly screws and springs annoyed me so much I can't be bothered switching it back.
Super bodge-job cutting the pickguard for the humbucker - combination of drill and Stanley knife. Adds character (!)

Will probably fit a graphtech nut on next string change. Apart from that I think it's pretty much finished.
It's a keeper.

Mine's a late 2005 Fat Telecaster. Looks like Sollophonic's but with a humbucker and a black pickguard. I swapped the bridge pickup for a Seymour Duncan STL-1B. I hope someday to get a Velvet Hammer in it. And a different humbucker.

Here's my 2005 Antique Sunburst. I filled and drilled holes to convert it to a vintage style bridge. The pickguard is a creamy white pearloid from Stewmac. CTS 250k audio taper pots, CRL 3-way switch, Fender barrel (flat-top) knobs, top hat switch, Fender MIM control plate. I've had other pickups in it but it's back to the stock Mighty Mite AlNiCo pickups now and I think they are great pickups. I think this is one of my Squier Teles that I had to replace the original flimsy jack keeper with a better one from StewMac.

The bridgeplate on it now I like for its thickness (slightly thicker and stiffer than FENDER PAT PEND), but the toploader holes are poorly placed. It's a Mighty Mite plate.

The saddles are RS Guitarworks steel. They came with the typical 3mm diameter, .5mm thread pitch screws, I drilled and tapped them for the Fender 6-32 screws you see in them now.

Here is my 2005 Standard with GFS Hot Punchers and a black pickguard.

And how it looks now.

Lots of plugging, drilling, and routing. Wilkinson compensted bridge and GFS pups round out the mods.

My so-called LE model. Couple of mods, Complete re-wire with BKP Yardbird set and 4way switch. Planet waves trim-lock tuners. And a new bone nut.

david, there's no need to get a chip on your shoulder. There's so much traffic on the TDPRI, not every post someone makes is guaranteed to have a followup. You shouldn't assume that because there was no reply soon after yours, that anyone thought anything negative about you or your gear.

I wouldn't worry whether or not others consider it a "real" Tele. Fender considers it real enough to put the name Tele on it. That's enough for me.

But you will probably stand a better chance of getting more Affinity Tele owners to respond with followup posts about their Affinitys, by starting a new thread in this forum dedicated to the Squier Affinity Tele.

Just got it Friday.

My very first guitar. Been using a borrowed one since Feb. It does seem to be a great value for the cost. I did a setup on it yesterday then played it a bunch. I really think I am gonna like it a lot!

I just bought a used Squier Standard, it's Walnut, just like BadHorsie's picture 6 posts up. It's got a 4-way switch instead of the standard 3-way. The seller, who was not the original owner, claims it came from the factory that way, I think that's probably not true.

I notice that on the Squier web site, there is no Service Manual PDF file available for the Standard. Anyone know why?

Richard

The simple answer is, they don't have them for all the Squier models. But there is one here for the Standard Telecaster® Black and Chrome (Special Edition) which is a Standard Series model, and that Tele has many of the same parts, and the same electronic parts and wiring scheme, as the Standard model in the Squier Standard Series. If you need replacement parts, you can order them from a Fender dealer. Music Parts Guru can probably get them for you, if you want to deal with an online dealer. They were able to find the right part number and get me a pickguard for a Squier Vintage Modified Custom II Tele.

Can anyone tell me which sizes of allen/hex keys I need for a Squier Standard Tele? Especially for adjusting the height of the saddles. Also for the truss rod, but no rush on that.

Thanks,
Richard

Can I join in?

Hi all.

I just got my '08 Squier Standard Tele which is the same color as the original poster's. This would be my first Tele and I am just loving it.

Currently, I am playing it through a Pignose I was able to get for $30. Eventually, I plan on feeding the Pignose to a Gina20 soundcard in my homebuilt DAW.

Cheers.

Mitch

I just measured mine with digital callipers
Saddles - 1.5mm
Truss rod - 3.95mm (I'm guessing its probably a 4mm wrench)

I have a blonde 2005 Std. with a few mods: electrosocket cup and switchcraft jack, Fender OV's, and a 4-way. Just got a Mellicaster setup, now it plays like a dream come true.

It's probably because you're in the wrong thread. This thread is for Squier Standard Telecaster owners - yours is an Affinity. There's probably a thread already for Affinity owners, if not, you could always start one.

My Squier Standard Tele is a vintage blonde. Except for the jack, it is still completely stock. While I'm sure there are much better pickups out there, I really like the stock ones and they sound better to me than the Tex-Mex pickups on my Fender Strat. It took few guitars (Squier Strat, Oscar Schmidt Delta King, Fender Strat) before I found the right guitar for me. I especially love the neck, though the string spacing is a little tight for some people.

Just moments ago I clicked a series of things and bought a used 2009 Squire Standard Telecaster. I think this guitar will fit nicely with my Super Champ XD.

The thing is I'm pretty uninformed about Teles and Squire Teles. Is the main difference just country of origin or is there more to it?

All I know for sure is that I'm looking forward to getting it and hearing a totally pure Fender sound coming from the Super Champ.

Can you guys give me any information on the guitar I just bought?

Thanks,
Fred

I am in the club too. I had a walnut one that i loved, but gave to a friend in need at a time when i had many more guitars than i do now. Now I have a couple sqwires and My Dano 12-string. My current (2 year old) main gigging Squire Standard (still bone stock) is below:

This is the Fat version of the Squier Standard Tele, just with a neck pickup HB rout.

I've swapped out the Squier HB for a Seymour Phat Cat single coil, and swapped the stock Squier bridge pickup for a Keystone.

Biggest mod: Doweled all the mount and through holes (fully glued dowels) then drilled for a 4 screw mount Vintage Fender specs bridge, and diagonally drilled the through holes back to the existing ferrules.

Have not even gotten to redoing the control plate - this plate has had an absolutely flabbergasting impact. This guitar was always sorta lame before that. Wow!!

Oh. And the neck is a big ol USACG SSV-1, Gotoh split shafts, tusq nut.

Thanks very kindly!

Many thanks to Yegbert, who showed the way to do this mod 2 years ago (can't believe it took me so long). With the metallic black finish, the exposed screw holes (dowels with wood glue, blacked out with marker pen) fall in the shadows and don't bother me at all.

I will redo both of the other two Squiers like this, both the one with the 59 Model humbucker in it and the one with the Seth Lover. Very excited. One of many many mods I've done, and yet this mod produced such an amazing result.

When you use one of these jigs for directional drilling, double tape the top of the guitar; they work but they will worry your finish if you don't take care.

I wish i had the tools and know how to do that mod. I have a Hipshot B-bender that I would dearly love to put on my Skwire standard, but trying to make that work with the 6 saddle bridge seems like kludge city. It would be a whole lot easier with the 3 saddle mcbee. Anyone done this mod b4 and want to help a TDPRI brother out, shout at me. Meanwhile, i do love the Squiers. I have had 2 standards. Both were sexcellent. I'd actually love to do one with a kestone & bucker combo. That would rule. Keep them coming~

Kp8, the conversion is about half the work you'll need to do along the way to the complete Hipshot B- bender. I haven't tried one yet; I need to research the model more, I have someone I can borrow one from - I might try that.

Meanwhile I did a second 4 screw mount conversion, this one with a Seymour Duncan Seth Lover and a Warmoth Vintage Modern 1 + 11/16ths Fatback neck that is not a Fat as some of the others of this model:

This is an Allparts TB 5125 bridge, but modded a little; all 6-32 hardware.

And now I'm working on the 3rd and final one!

Then comes the Tele Specials!

And here's the 3rd and final Squier:

Model 59 Seymour Duncan.

USACG SSV-1 one piece, one inch thick boatneck style neck.

Stew Mac # 0099 plate and # 5167 saddles, modded to 6-32 hardware. Just a little of the screw holes show. I may touch 'em up with some black fingernail polish, but probably not. Just doesn't bug me, altho I was so sure it would. Held of on this so long, in fear.

This bridge is one I installed as per the instructions of Yegbert when he did the first one (I know of) back in 2007. Check the search function under Yegbert for his tutorial, 2007.

On that Tele Special, I couldn't tell whose bridge you were interested in. All the images I show are modified bridges; the first one Yegbert shows is a stock one.

I have one of the Black and Chrome Specials on order and I'm very evcited about it. There's a guy on Ebay who makes Bakelite pickguards in his house. They come out flat black, no color at all. I got one in preparation for the Black and Chrome showing up. The only chrome that will be on it will be the tuners, string trees, bridge, switch and control cover and the neck pickup. The chrome (plastic) pickguard won't be there.

I wish the whole neck was painted black. Maybe that;s something I can work on later.

This Tele will be one of a set of three guitars that for me represent what electric guitars should be. The other two are an American Strat built in '77 and a Chinese JM40, Jazzmaster clone. I can't afford a real Jazzmaster but the JM40 is very good. I'll post pics when the black one gets here.

I have a guy trying to sell me a Squire Tele made in Korea in the 80's, for $150.00 is this to much or a fair price?? No I am not trying to make money on it, just don't want to get taken again.. It's red with a maple neck, has a bridge cover and the tuners are upside down from most on here. I am new to this and trying to learn..Help!!
