EMGs ROCK. If you want Waylon tone, they're the ticket. With new strings, a chorus pedal set a particular way (BOSS CH-1 -- rate and depth up, but the effect itself turned DOWN), and the EMG bridge pickup, I can NAIL that cool Waylon early/mid 90s tone... think "Cowboys, Sisters, Rascals, and Dirt." I think the particular song I'm thinking of is "All Of My Sisters Are Girls," if I'm not mistaken. Take away the chorus and I can also get the 70s tone, ala "Rainy Day Woman." My setup is nothing too special -- a MIM Standard Tele (black, of course ;-)) through a Fender Deluxe 90 (SS). The EMGs still shine through. I can only imagine them through a '59 Bassman RI or a TRRI... The coolest Waylon tone is from "Highwaymen Live," IMO. It's like it's distorted or sumptin'... it sounds so "electric." That defined the electric guitar for me when I was 5 or so. That intro before the first song... WOW. "Ain't No Good Chain Gang" and "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" SMOKE. Very cool. :-) Anyway, before this turns into a short book... lol... I'll just tell ya: the EMGs will blow you away. :-) Take care! Casey.

Very nice 90s Thinline on eBay
Ok, after the usual buyer beware and I don't know seller nor guitar:
Sunburst 90s Thinline. Personally I'd prefer a rosewood neck on sunburst, but... Geir :)

JD tele on eBay
A good alternative for your first DB tele. This one has been modded, but original bridge is supposed to be included:
Starting at 500 is a bit high though, IMHO. And whatever he says, they are not that hard to find... Buyer beware! Geir :)

Late '80s it isn't, of course...
As I found out with mine, the model wasn't introduced until '92.

My JD Tele - made when? (bit long - sorry)
As mentioned further up the thread, by serial number, my JD is '85/86, and is labelled "Made In Japan". However, the model was not introduced until 1992.
Mr Gearhead's AxeDater also lists the same serials for '97/98, marked "Crafted In Japan". I was reading "50 Years of Fender", by Tony Bacon (for only about the 35th time in a month...), and saw something which made me leap out of bed and go and look at my axe. On the rear of the headstock is a label, which I never took a lot of notice of before. It's one of the '46 - '96 50th Anniversary labels. OK, it's likely to be a rough-and-ready dating method, but at least it has a ball park to be in! Anyone else know how free Fender were with these labels, and if it might just be fairly accurate after all?

Please Sir, may I have another Tele?
(Let me be a Newbie for a second) It looks like I've entered yet another parallel universe :o
I recently picked up (yikes!) my 10th Tele but my first double bound. This sunburst double bound was offered up by a fellow TDPRI-er (thank you DY). What I'm curious about is that this double bound was made by Bacchus (or Headway if you look at the neckplate). I know these are related to the Japanese company which made (or makes) the reissues for Fender, but I don't know much more abou them. Is there any other good info on these guitars or this company? Thnx |

My double bound sunburst Bacchus Tele is actually the one Dave Yeats used to own. I guess GAS finally did get the better of him (and me too for that matter :D
Dave had a Seymor Duncan neck and a Fralin bridge PU set up. I swapped the SD for a Fralin Blues neck PU. I have a couple of other bound Teles, but they're only single top bound. The bodies are built by a local craftsman out of mahogany, hollowed out, and capped with a mahogany cap w/pear wood vaneer. They are very light and extremely resonant. Because he and Lindy Fralin are both here in Richmond, VA, these "Bubbacasters" have become the test beds for a number of great Tele projects. In fact, I'm deviating a bit and will be assembling one with two TV Trons (HB style Filtertrons). Should be pretty cool when it's done. |

TeleGeir: I'll send you a pic and applications for the DBT Club...

Love my Bacchus
This Bacchus is a really nice guitar. It has a nice full feel to the neck (probably a more of a C shape than flattened D shape like on some Fenders I play), which is nice for me since I have pretty big hands. Whoever set it up did a great job. It's very easy to play. It's also reasonably light and very resonant.
I've heard a lot of good things about the Japanese reissues (especially the ones from the 1980s). I know a couple of people in town with reissues. One of them has a sunburst Strat which (even though it's not a Tele) I hold as my personal gold standard for tone and feel (truly an inspirational instrument). The other is another double bound Sunburst Tele, almost identical to mine. It's a great guitar too. In fact, I probably wouldn't have thought to buy this Bacchus if I hadn't played my friend's first. Awhile back, I picked up a new reissue Blue Flower Tele (MIJ) for dirt cheap. The neck of the Bacchus feels very similar to this new reissue (same basic shape and tight fretboard radius). However, the Bacchus is a more "alive" and has a more natural feel to it (due to set up and rosewood neck?) than the Blue Flower. Though, I must say, the Blue Flower improved immensely after getting new electronics and a Fralin Steel Pole 43 in the neck (the reissue bridge PU sounds fine). In fact, I might put a SP in the Bacchus. We'll see. |

Thanks PhatTele...just what I wanted to hear. I usually find the 60's Teles to have too slim necks. I prefer a fuller profile so I guess this will fit me like a glove. Sneaky put some SD Nashville 5/2 pickups in mine.
I was really close to buy DaveY's (yours) Tele but since I got Sneaky I let you have the other one :D

Bacchus make some very nice guitars. I have a few... both strats and teles. I got a really nice Bacchus tele with Fralins, 2 piece non center joined limited to 20 pieces. Man what a nice guitar. It was very hard letting go of the one I had like yours but Johan will look after it so I know it`s going to a good home. Serial number... lucky 7000.

A long story..........
I'm re-posting this saga over how I got my second double bound Tele, as I originally put it on one of Geir's secondary posting about the DBTC, instead of this main thread. Its quite long, apologies in advance. Will you please sign me up as an official member, please, Mr. Geir!
Original post: "I must own up as a fully paid up member of the double bound club. I love them! As Peter UK mentioned, Geir, when we met at the London Guitar Show, we paid you due mind when we came upon the beautiful Fret King d/b sunburst thinline. Now, Peter mentioned my funny little "custom" which I bought last year. I already had a MIA 62RI Sunburst, which I like a lot, but I came upon this pretty sunburst double bound baby in a well known London dealer last summer. It was billed as a "67 Custom" and priced, (highly) accordingly. It sure looked nice, but a quick glance showed it was probably not truly an official "Custom" - for a start the decal was a standard 1966 "transition" logo, without the words "Custom Telecaster" that should be there on a pre-68 Custom. Also, the body was clearly three piece ash, (beautiful grain though,) where most Customs are alder, and either one or two piece. Pickups and bridge looked right though, for a mid 60's, but the control plate looked wrong, - knobs were domed, not flat. Pot dates were 1980. Pickguard might have been right, hard to tell. Dealer admitted it was re-finned, although maybe a while ago, as it looked pretty well "reliced". Perhaps in 1980 when the pots were replaced. I pointed out all these "errors" to the dealer, (who I know quite well,) including the rather clumsy humbucker rout under the guard. Told him no one was going to pay him anything like the sum his client wanted. Then went home, but couldn't get this little beauty out of my mind. I went back to visit a few weeks later, - it was still there, still priced at around £3,000! At this point the dealer said, "plug it in, see what you think". Big mistake! The guitar sounded awesome, every bit of twang and chime you could possibly look for in a Tele. At this point I asked the dealer if I could pull it apart a bit more. He said "do what you like - here's a screwdriver, see you later!" Neckdate came up at July 1966, but interestingly, on "accidentally" prising off the copper plate on the bottom of the bridge p/up, I was greeted with the correct double sided tape, and under that clearly visible in handwriting, "2/21/68". Neckplate number, btw, also puts it about 68 or so. So, we had '66 neck, and 68 p/ups, (the neck had the exact same cloth wiring, pretty sure its a pair to the bridge). We had a body with the correct pin router hole marks on the back, flat ferrules, a channel rout, but no routers hump. So perhaps 64-68. Some evidence that the body was once red, from paint fragments in the routs and in the grain on the back. Oddest of all was the binding itself, about half the depth of the binding on my 62RI and on most other DB's I've seen. But it looks a lot like the narrow, (I think, picture is not too clear) binding on the 59 Custom shown in the colour section of Duchossoir's book. So who knows, - could be anything, but almost certainly a real 60's Fender body of some sort.. To cut a long story short the dealer asked me what I would pay for it, and I said I valued it around the same price as a used Relic, perhaps £1,500 or so. Dealer, (very politely) told me to forget it, not a chance, way off the beam. Two weeks later, dealer phones me at work, and says "Would that be cash then?" I thought for a minute and said "Yes, go on then - does it have a case?" Turns out it had a genuine mid sixties case with it, so I thought, what the hell, go for it, I can't imagine ever getting a better double bound Tele for any less. Much as I like my 62RI, its frankly not a patch on this little 66/68 "what ever it is". I've since had Bill Puplett (well known UK guitar tech) refret and refurbish the finger board, who offered the opinion that its probably not an official "Custom", but a "custom ordered" tele, (the existence of which is referred to in the "Bible",) some of which were solid coloured on double-bound ash, where no-one would have cared if it was two or three piece. Puplett even thinks he recognises the sunburst refinish as the style of UK luthier and builder Roger Giffin, who was mostly active in the seventies and eighties. But who knows what this little baby is, really. I've some pictures, but no way of getting them up here. Peter might help me to get something up on the board for you all to see. Sorry this has gone on a bit, hope you don't mind." Rick J. |

Have project, want to go DB?
Then this MIJ body from an 1985 '62 RI might be the ticket. Looks pretty sharp, and have only minor dings according to seller. Buyer beware, always!
Not yet at reserve, it may be too expensive, of course. Geir :)

Two 90s Thinlines on eBay
These are really cool guitars. A big shame that they were discontinued. But I guess they simply were too expensive to build...
The natural one is not my favourite (the "Gretsch" sunset orange is), but you may like it. The sunburst one looks nice, although I think it would look even better with a rosewood board. As always: Buyer beware! Geir :)

MIJ Custom on eBay
Another eBay DB:
These are not that rare, at least not on eBay. This one is a lot more cream coloured than the usual ones, and look better IMHO. I have an ambivalent taste for these, don't know why. May be a good buy. As usual on eBay, ask your questions before bidding and Buyer beware! Geir :)

Buck Owens Tele on eBay
If you lusted for a Buck, here is an opportunity:
![]() As usual buyer beware! Seller has little feedback and only does MOs and checks, I'd be extra careful with this one. Ask 750 is fair. But still 5 days to go, so we shall see how far it moves. BTW: A Gold Bigsby is another 150... 8) Geir :)

MIJ JD tele on eBay
Very nice looking guitar, but at 599/675 it is a bit pricey for a JD IMHO. Geir :)

Beautiful MIJ body on eBay
From 1985 MIJ Tele Custom. Perfect for a double bound project. Not yet at reserve, so may be too expensive. I'd really like it myself, but I don't need it. (Please tell me I don't. As usual, I don't know seller or item, so Buyer Beware! Geir :)
