Some things seem to be different here in Europe .

First the SX Teles sold are different: Nearly correct headshape, vintage tuner, vintage bridge, no string through. So dropping in new tuner was a pice of cake, I only had to enlarge the holes from 8 mm to 8.5 mm.

Second the "Kluson" brand name is owned by Göldo (to my knowledge this is a Rockinger spin off). I read somewhere in this board that the "vintage double line tuners" are made by Gotoh - not a bad reference. Second plus is that these tuners are quite cheap.

Here the SX and the Kluson tuners are side by side. Quite close, aren't they?

Please have a look at the tuner shafts: The one at the SX tuners are much shorter than the Klusons, so tuning with the original tuners was not very easy as you nearly broke your fingers.

Cheers Roland

Very interesting. I wonder why there is a difference? Maybe a license (patent) issue!
Any one who installed new tuners any issues? Will the vintage cover up the holes from the SX tuners or will fender style tuners use the same holes. Any post size problems?

I got one of the left handed STL50 BSB ones when Rondo was selling them for $59 this spring. I put OVs in my main Tele a few years ago so the stock pickups were sitting around. Just put them in the SX last week and tried it at a gig last night just for about 4 songs. It sounds real nice. Now for a good setup...

Ive been scouring for SXs available to the UK for ages, these guys in Belgium have just started selling them and for once we may be getting a better deal than in the US.

What Tele neck (if any) would you compare the STL50 to.
Year, custom shop, signiture model?

A baseball bat (lol)!
Seriously, it's a 13 radius C neck with semi-jumbo frets so it's big compared to a 7.25 radius V neck with vintage style frets. I got a CIJ 72 Custom RI with a C neck and this is bigger. It's a good neck though. Almost reminds me a little of an Ibanez I got.

Mine's a little less yellow. Kinda like French's meets Dijon. Never tried the Strats but got an SX LP Special clone with a set neck and chinese P90s. All for about $120 US. It's got the big C neck too. It's my nasty open tune slide monster. Got an Agile electric 12 string too. It's da bomb. Quite well made, especially for the price. Won't make me ditch my Fenders but they're a nice addition. Might turn my SX Tele into a 5 string Keef one.

Picked up a STL/H last week and am amazed by it: with just a standard set-up it plays great, good fretwork, stock pups are ok and stays in tune very well. Ok, it's not as well finished as a $1000 guitar and the matching of the different pieces of wood could be better, but that doesn't affect playability or sound.

Bought mine locally; cost a bit more than on ebay, but am happy I did because one of the neck screws was loose and could get no grip ('dol' for Dutchmen). Got a different one without question.

Hope yours arrives soon!

Hackney burgers are good.
Gotta get the onion loaf!
Wash it all down with some good beer.
Or a Green River if you don't drink.
That's a nice healthy Chicago style meal.

My slightly modded VGN STL50

I removed the orange tint on my STL50's neck, reshaped the headstock, and replaced the saddles and the nut. Future mods include replacement tuners, a pearloid guard, and set of Keystones.

@ steve G. whoa! that freakin quick... this thing just might get in tommorow then... great!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We in europe don't need to RESHAPE the steenkin headstock... it comes Fenderized!
Also we get proper vintage style 3barrel bridges (with a steel E/A saddle)
Al we needs to do is drill stringthrough and place ferrules.
And replace pots and switch...

neh neh neh neh neh!

And we can use vintage Kluson tuners. Tuner holes are 8 mm and can be easily enlarged to 8.5 mm, the holes for the screws fit perfectly:

I ordered my tele direct from the seller (the thing ebay warned me for); it arrived within one week.

Next thing I will change are the pickups; I think I pull the trigger for Fender Nocasters. Any experience with them on a SX? I do not really know I it is sensible putting 100 € PUps on a 99 € guitar .

Cheers Roland

Check out www.axesrus.co.uk they have some great (and also cheap) pickups on offer.
The giovannis are good enough to deliver all the twang you need.
And if you must spend, try the tonerider pure vintage. have em in ESQ 0001 and they are the bomb!

I thought about the tonerider, unfortunately they are sold out. I already burned 20 € for "Wilkinson lic." PUps, they not much better than the stock ones. They also have ceramic bar magnets glued to the bottom instead of rod magnets.

On the one side Giovanni PUps at axesrus will cost me appr. 70 € (with shipping), Toneriders cost 90 € here in Germany (sold at eBay).

On the other side I can get the Nocasters for 100 € at a local store - and from what I read here in the forum they have exactly the sound I am looking for: a brilliant, almost strat-like neck and a bridge PU that is just a little tiny bit on the warm side but still with lots of twang.

Cheers Roland

The Klusons have a real smooth action and they stay in tune pretty well. I ordered them at Thoman for 28 €:

http://www.thomann.de/nl/goeldo_mc6ln.htm.

Seem to be 1 € cheaper in the Dutch international shop .

This are not the Klusons sold in the US as Göldö/Rockinger have the rights for the Kluson brand here in Germany for some reasons. I read somewhere that these tuners are made by Gotoh which is not the badest reputation.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you go about refinishing the neck? I'm doing mine right now (reshape plus de-orange).

Hi Adam,

Mine's here. Took five working days in all - not too bad from Belgium. I'll post some photos when I can get round to it. Really pleased.

(I'm at the edge of the Peak District, about half an hour from Manchester.)

Yeah, the colour's not bad at all - more Colman's Mild American Mustard than the English variety!

Glossop is the place, though I'm originally from the Warrington/Widnes area - a woolyback?

Really cool colour way better than I thought.

I did not have the heart to order this colour after I saw the eBay pictures so I took the sunburst one.

The nut looks the same as on mine, probably the slots were made with a chainsaw.

Nice guitar anywhere, enjoy!

Cheers Roland
